Fortnite Save the World Free-to-Play on Switch 2 on April 16, 2026

Epic Games will expand access to Fortnite’s original player-versus-environment experience when Save the World becomes free-to-play on April 16, 2026.

The developer confirmed the move as part of a rollout that includes availability on the Nintendo Switch 2 and multiple other platforms, while noting the mode will remain unavailable on the original Nintendo Switch and on mobile devices.

Save the World is the co-op action-building campaign that preceded Fortnite’s well-known battle royale.

The mode first launched with Fortnite in early access in 2017 and tasks players with holding back hordes of monsters, building large defenses, crafting weapons, looting, and progressing character systems.

To help onboard returning and new players, Epic has worked with community expert Beast to publish a comprehensive 2026 breakdown of Save the World’s current systems and progression.

Epic framed the change as an opportunity to welcome more players to the mode.

In journalistic terms, Epic said that after nearly ten years, the original Fortnite experience will open to a broader audience when Save the World goes free-to-play on April 16, 2026.

Pre-registration incentives are live ahead of the free-to-play launch.

Epic has confirmed that players who pre-register will receive in-game rewards, including a Save the World hero.

Existing players will also receive thank-you gifts when the mode transitions to free-to-play: Epic will distribute superchargers, vouchers, and gold on the same day the mode becomes free-to-play.

An April 17, 2026 update clarified platform availability: Save the World is now free-to-play on Switch 2 and several other platforms, but Epic reiterated that the mode will not be made available on the original Nintendo Switch or on mobile storefronts.

For Nintendo-focused audiences, the Switch 2 launch means Save the World will appear on Nintendo hardware for the first time in this free-to-play form, distributed through the eShop on supported systems.
