Nintendo has officially announced that its historic Virtual Boy library is making its way to the Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch platforms, marking a significant revival of classic gaming history.
This move enables a new generation of players to experience the strikingly unique titles originally released for Nintendo’s ambitious, though short-lived, 1995 stereoscopic console.
The announcement was made on June 21, 2024, through an official press release, and has already begun generating excitement among retro enthusiasts and long-time Nintendo fans alike.
The Virtual Boy, developed by Nintendo during the mid-1990s, was renowned for its innovative 3D graphics and distinctive red-and-black color scheme.
Despite its forward-thinking technology, the console's commercial lifespan was brief, with only 22 games officially released before it was discontinued in less than a year.
However, several of its titles, such as 'Mario's Tennis,' 'Wario Land,' and 'Red Alarm,' have since gained cult status, with persistent demand for wider accessibility on modern platforms.
According to a Nintendo spokesperson, the company recognized the enduring passion among its community for the Virtual Boy’s unique games and is committed to preserving these experiences for a wider audience.
"Bringing the Virtual Boy line-up to Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch via the Nintendo eShop is part of our broader mission to celebrate Nintendo’s rich legacy and deliver memorable gameplay to both new and returning players," the spokesperson said in an official statement.
Nintendo has outlined that several Virtual Boy classics will be available for digital purchase and download through the Nintendo eShop.
Launch titles are confirmed to include 'Mario's Tennis’ and ‘Wario Land,' with additional games being added to the service over time.
Each title has undergone careful emulation to ensure faithful reproduction of gameplay, while optimizing for the superior displays and controls of the Nintendo Switch 2 and the original Switch hardware.
The Virtual Boy’s arrival on Nintendo Switch platforms comes on the heels of a string of successful legacy library expansions, such as the incorporation of NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, and Game Boy catalogs to the Nintendo Switch Online service, which collectively contributed to over 230 million subscriptions globally as of March 2024.
With this latest move, Nintendo underscores its dedication to both game preservation and nostalgia-driven innovation.
The company invites longtime fans and curious newcomers to experience a foundational, if sometimes overlooked, chapter in Nintendo’s creative evolution—all from the convenience of the Nintendo eShop on Switch hardware.
Players will be able to access the first wave of Virtual Boy titles beginning in July 2024, with further availability expected to roll out seasonally.
