Nintendo Confirms Ongoing Movie Development After Legend of Zelda Live-Action Film
Nintendo, the renowned video game giant behind beloved franchises like Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda, has officially confirmed that it will continue expanding its efforts in film production.
This announcement comes on the heels of the company’s recently released financial results, in which Nintendo outlined its vision for cinema adaptations well beyond the highly anticipated live-action Legend of Zelda movie, scheduled for release in 2027.
On the 33rd page of its latest quarterly report, Nintendo clarified its movie strategy moving forward: “At present, we are investing actively and directly participating in the development and production of several films, from the initial planning phases through to full production.” This initiative is closely linked to Nintendo Pictures, the company’s dedicated film division, which was rebranded to spearhead multimedia projects and recently released an animated Pikmin short that garnered positive feedback from fans and critics.
In a statement to shareholders, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa elaborated on the company’s cinematic ambitions.
According to Furukawa, Nintendo is now "creating a framework that will allow for a steady flow of film releases," beyond the titles that are already publicly announced.
While the company is not promising annual film releases, Furukawa emphasized the importance of a regular cadence.
He noted, “We are continuing preparations for the consistent rollout of movies going forward,” indicating a long-term strategy that aligns with Nintendo’s goal of extending its intellectual properties into new entertainment realms.
Nintendo’s recent box-office achievements underscore the potential of this strategy.
With The Super Mario Bros.
Movie having crossed the $1 billion mark in global ticket sales, there is little doubt about the commercial appeal of the company’s major brands.
This success has raised expectations for future projects, including the rumored Super Mario Galaxy movie and the newly revealed live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda.
The shift from animation to live-action for the Zelda film marks a significant step and demonstrates Nintendo’s willingness to diversify its approach in order to reach varied audiences.
Although the company has not disclosed the specific franchises that will be adapted next, Nintendo Pictures’ increased activity suggests multiple projects are in the pipeline.
With each release, Nintendo is not only aiming to captivate moviegoers but also to create new entry points back to its core business on platforms like the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo eShop.
As Nintendo continues to blur the lines between video games and film, its carefully measured approach signals a commitment to quality and brand integrity.
The cross-media expansion opens new opportunities for both established fans and newcomers to engage with classic Nintendo characters in fresh and innovative ways.
