Nintendo’s strategy for 2025 and beyond is closely watched as the company prepares for the long-anticipated launch of the Nintendo Switch 2.
However, Nintendo is not turning its back on its massive Nintendo Switch user base, with over 150 million systems sold worldwide since 2017.
Speaking to The Washington Post, Doug Bowser, President of Nintendo of America, reiterated the company's commitment to supporting the original Nintendo Switch, ensuring loyal players continue to find value in the ecosystem even as new hardware approaches.
Recognizing that not every fan is ready to move on to the next generation, Bowser discussed plans to keep the existing audience engaged.
"With an install base exceeding 150 million units globally, our focus remains on keeping players connected and involved," Bowser explained.
He indicated that further announcements about Nintendo’s ongoing support will be shared during the company’s next earnings report, scheduled for May 8, 2025.
"Not everyone may be ready to leap to the Switch 2, and we want to make sure those players feel included," he added.
Bowser elaborated on the importance of monitoring consumer interactions at various levels within the Switch ecosystem.
By observing usage trends and engagement habits, Nintendo aims to better understand the needs and expectations of both current and future Switch owners.
"It’s crucial for us to see how players interact with our platforms.
That insight informs our vision of the future and helps shape our content strategy," Bowser told The Washington Post.
He emphasized that delivering the right games will continue to be a priority, ensuring that the library remains compelling across all supported platforms.
Upcoming game releases further demonstrate Nintendo’s dual-platform commitment.
Highly anticipated titles like Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream and Rhythm Heaven Groove have been confirmed for the original Switch, with launches planned through 2026.
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is also slated for release on both the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, signaling a deliberate cross-generational approach to major franchises.
As Nintendo balances support for the original Switch with anticipation for the Switch 2, the company’s robust strategy aims to serve its extensive install base while welcoming new adopters.
Gamers will learn more about Nintendo’s future plans at the next earnings call, where continued engagement and fresh content for the Nintendo Switch platform are expected to be key topics.
