Description

Nintendo is commemorating its historic roots with a special Super Mario-themed hanafuda card event at Kosugiyu Harajuku, located within Tokyo Plaza Harajuku Harakado.

This unique collaboration, which runs from February 17 through April 1, 2025, invites visitors to immerse themselves in both the traditional Japanese bathhouse experience and Nintendo’s celebrated card game legacy. Nintendo, founded in 1889 as a hanafuda playing card manufacturer, has partnered with Kosugiyu Harajuku to offer a modern twist on their original product while leveraging the global appeal of Super Mario.

Throughout the event, patrons of the B1 floor bath at Tokyo Plaza Harajuku Harakado can play with and purchase Super Mario-themed hanafuda cards.

In addition, fans will have the opportunity to buy exclusive hanafuda-themed merchandise and participate in hands-on lessons and practice sessions held on weekends. Enhancing the immersive experience, even admission tickets at the bathhouse will be styled after the distinct and vibrant hanafuda cards.

The collaboration reflects Kosugiyu Harajuku’s commitment to celebrating Japan’s rich traditions and natural relaxation culture, aligning perfectly with Nintendo’s historical significance in the playing card industry. A representative for Kosugiyu Harajuku explained that the event is designed to honor the time-honored customs central to Japanese bathhouses, while also spotlighting the enduring influence of companies like Nintendo on popular culture and entertainment.

Nintendo’s Super Mario-themed hanafuda cards, while not exclusive to this event, are currently available for purchase via the Nintendo Store online.

However, the opportunity to enjoy these cards in the authentic atmosphere of a communal Japanese bathhouse offers a truly distinctive experience. For visitors, entrance to the event is approximately ¥550, which converts to about $3.60 USD or £2.87 GBP.

The price point ensures accessibility for both local residents and international fans eager to participate in this cultural convergence of bathing and gaming history. Nintendo’s return to its card-playing origins serves as a reminder of its enduring legacy and innovative spirit.

This event not only celebrates the company’s dynamic evolution from hanafuda manufacturer to global gaming titan, but also underscores the enduring appeal of their classic products.

Bathhouse guests are encouraged to join the festivities—but as the organizers advise, care should be taken not to let the cards get wet.
