Nintendo Switch Maintains Lead in Japanese Sales Charts as Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Drive Software Success
The latest data from the Media Create Japanese sales charts underscores Nintendo’s ongoing dominance in both software and hardware sectors.
For the week ending August 31, 2017, the Nintendo Switch once again led Japanese hardware sales, further cementing its position as the market leader since its launch.
In software, the PlayStation 4 debut of Everybody’s Golf claimed the top spot, moving an impressive 100,719 units in its opening week.
However, Splatoon 2 for Nintendo Switch demonstrated enduring popularity, securing second place in the charts with weekly sales of 53,320, bringing its lifetime total to 1,056,500 copies.
The vibrant shooter continues to capture the attention of Japanese gamers, contributing significantly to Nintendo’s sustained sales momentum.
Atlus’ Etrian Mystery Dungeon 2 for the Nintendo 3DS debuted at number three, selling 29,887 units (including limited editions).
Despite this strong showing, sales were down compared to the initial release in the series, representing a notable challenge for the developer.
Atlus expressed disappointment at the sequel’s performance, noting that sales were less than half of the original title’s launch numbers.
Capcom’s Monster Hunter XX for Nintendo Switch recorded weekly sales of 27,120, bringing its total to 111,396 units.
This figure is considered below expectations for the franchise, which has historically delivered stronger debut numbers on Nintendo platforms.
The publisher acknowledged that Monster Hunter XX’s performance lagged behind the series’ previous benchmarks.
Other notable Nintendo Switch titles fared well, with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe selling 12,474 copies (672,688 lifetime sales), while ARMS and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild continued to maintain steady momentum.
Meanwhile, the Switch version of Nights of Azure 2: Bride of the New Moon landed in sixteenth position, reflecting the younger platform’s smaller install base when compared to Sony’s PS4 and PS Vita.
On the hardware front, the Nintendo Switch led the market with 50,074 units sold for the week, followed by the PlayStation 4 at 21,419 units and the Nintendo 3DS LL at 12,332.
Sales were up week-over-week for several systems, with the New 3DS LL and New 2DS LL (called XL outside Japan) seeing positive movement.
Here’s a quick summary of platform performance for the week:
- Nintendo Switch: 50,074 units
- PlayStation 4: 21,419 units
- New 3DS LL: 12,332 units
- New 2DS LL: 11,515 units
- PlayStation 4 Pro: 4,965 units
- PlayStation Vita: 3,975 units
- 2DS: 1,935 units
- Wii U: 116 units
- Xbox One: 78 units
While Nintendo celebrated another successful week, with the Switch and several of its games maintaining strong positions in the charts, both Atlus and Capcom faced challenges as key titles did not meet expectations.
Etrian Mystery Dungeon 2’s softer launch and Monster Hunter XX’s sluggish sales highlight the competitive nature of the Japanese games market even as Nintendo continues to set the pace with its latest hardware and evergreen software offerings.
