Nintendo has officially unveiled significant upgrades to its Nintendo Switch Online service, coinciding with the upcoming launch of the Nintendo Switch 2.
Among the most anticipated enhancements is the introduction of the rewind feature for Nintendo 64 (N64) titles on the Switch 2, bringing parity with the rewind capabilities already available on NES and SNES games for the original Nintendo Switch.
Previously, Nintendo Switch Online subscribers enjoyed rewind functionality on select classic platforms through the Switch eShop, but this feature was notably absent for N64 games.
The new rollout ensures fans can now revisit challenging moments or replay nostalgic favorites with greater control and flexibility on Nintendo Switch 2 hardware.
Nintendo confirmed in a recent announcement that the improved N64 app for Nintendo Switch Online will offer more than just the rewind function.
Players will have access to a newly implemented CRT filter, designed to authentically replicate the retro visual experience of classic N64 games.
In addition, comprehensive button remapping will allow users to customize controls according to their preferences, enhancing accessibility and gameplay experience.
The expansion doesn’t stop with N64.
Nintendo also revealed the upcoming support for GameCube games on Nintendo Switch Online for the Switch 2 platform.
This marks the first time GameCube classics will be officially playable on Nintendo’s latest hardware.
The launch lineup includes prominent titles such as The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, and Soulcalibur 2—each accompanied by online multiplayer support and full button remapping.
To further enrich the nostalgic experience, Nintendo has developed a new GameCube controller modeled after the original design.
In an official statement, Nintendo highlighted the emphasis on delivering a more complete retro gaming experience to fans.
"With the addition of rewind, visual filters and extensive customization options, Nintendo Switch Online continues to evolve as the premier destination for classic Nintendo entertainment," a company spokesperson detailed in the announcement.
Nintendo celebrated these new features with the release of a dedicated trailer, now available for viewing on the official Nintendo channels.
The reveal demonstrates the company's ongoing commitment to expanding its digital library and improving player features across its hardware platforms, setting the stage for a robust lineup as Nintendo Switch 2 approaches release.
The Nintendo Switch Online service has grown steadily since its debut, amassing millions of users and providing continuous content updates via the Nintendo Direct presentations.
With the integration of N64 rewind support and the highly anticipated introduction of GameCube games, Nintendo's latest offerings promise to set a new standard for retro gaming accessibility on modern consoles.
