Nintendo has revealed significant details about the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, confirming the release of both Japanese and global SKUs during its April 2nd Nintendo Direct presentation for the Japanese market.
With a targeted launch date of June 5, 2025, these new hardware variations highlight Nintendo's approach to region-centric offerings and global accessibility.
Japan-Specific and Global SKUs: Key Differences
Nintendo’s hardware lineup for the Nintendo Switch 2 will include two distinct versions in Japan.
The first, a SKU exclusively dedicated to the Japanese market, will allow only Nintendo Accounts registered to Japan to purchase and play online titles.
This version supports only the Japanese language as the system interface and will retail for 49,980 yen (including sales tax), which equates to approximately USD334.
In parallel, a multi-language global SKU will be available via the Japanese My Nintendo Store, mirroring the variant released in international markets.
This global SKU supports up to 16 languages—including Japanese—and allows linking with Nintendo Accounts set to any region.
The global version comes with a price tag of 69,980 yen (including sales tax), or about USD467.
Region Locking and eShop Accessibility
Users purchasing the global SKU will be able to access the Japanese Nintendo eShop while also retaining flexibility to connect with other regional eShops, depending on their Nintendo Account setting.
However, the Japanese-specific SKU will restrict users to only the Japanese Nintendo eShop, with no access granted to overseas eShops such as those from the United States or Europe.
This restricts content availability and is reminiscent of the partial region-locking implemented on the Tencent-issued Nintendo Switch in mainland China.
Game Card Compatibility Clarified
Nintendo has addressed concerns around physical Game Card compatibility across regions.
The company has stated, "We cannot guarantee that Game Cards purchased outside (Japan) will work on the Nintendo Switch 2 Japan-Only model." This statement closely echoes past disclaimers found in both Nintendo Co.
Ltd (Japan) and Nintendo of America’s official FAQs, where Nintendo typically maintains a single global SKU for the Switch outside China.
In practice, this disclaimer suggests broad compatibility but with no formal guarantee, as cross-region testing is not routinely performed.
Notably, even the region-locked Tencent Nintendo Switch in China allows games purchased from outside China to function on the local hardware.
Launch Timing and Industry Impact
The Nintendo Switch 2 is poised for a simultaneous release of its Japanese and global SKUs on June 5, 2025, offering unprecedented clarity into Nintendo's regional sales strategy.
This move comes as Nintendo continues to build on the blockbuster success of the original Nintendo Switch, which has sold more than 125 million units since its March 2017 debut.
With the introduction of both Japanese- and global-focused models, Nintendo reinforces its commitment to meeting diverse consumer needs while maintaining an efficient, scalable hardware ecosystem.
As the company clarifies language support, account linking, and Game Card usage, consumers and industry observers alike can plan with greater confidence for the next major step in Nintendo Switch hardware evolution.
