Description

Nintendo has released its most recent fiscal report, providing an in-depth look at the company’s projections for the current fiscal year, which will conclude on March 31, 2026.

The highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2, set to build on the legacy of Nintendo’s record-breaking hybrid console, is at the forefront of these projections, with Nintendo outlining robust sales expectations amid a transitional period for its hardware lineup. For the current fiscal year, Nintendo estimates it will sell 15 million units of Nintendo Switch 2 hardware and 45 million units of Nintendo Switch 2 software globally.

This marks an ambitious start for the next-generation console, reflecting Nintendo’s confidence in strong consumer demand and an appealing launch lineup.

These projections come as the company prepares to shift focus from the best-selling Nintendo Switch to its successor, further solidifying Nintendo’s role as a major force in the video game hardware market. In contrast, the report highlights significant year-over-year declines for the outgoing Nintendo Switch.

Hardware sales are forecasted to drop by 58.3%, from 10.8 million units sold in the previous fiscal year to a projected 4.5 million units in the current cycle.

Similarly, Nintendo Switch software sales are expected to decrease by 32.4%, falling from 155.41 million to 105 million units.

This anticipated tapering is common during hardware generational transitions, as consumers pivot to the latest platform offerings. Nintendo also clarified its methodology for recording software sales in the fiscal report.

Physical editions released for the Nintendo Switch 2 will be counted as Nintendo Switch 2 software sales units.

Digital versions of these titles, however, will be included in Nintendo Switch software sales units.

As outlined, this distinction affects how certain bundles and downloadable content are accounted for in official sales figures. Specifically, software sales figures for the fiscal year include units provided through hardware or other bundled products, totaling approximately 2.97 million units.

Importantly, forecasted software sales units do not encompass titles bundled with hardware packages, such as those included in the “Nintendo Switch 2 + Mario Kart World Bundle.” Packaged software for Nintendo Switch 2 is classified under its own platform’s sales, while digitally distributed versions fall within the current Switch’s metrics.

Additionally, the sale of upgrade packs is excluded from software sales counts. Nintendo’s approach to reporting these metrics underscores its commitment to transparency and precision in tracking its product transition phase.

As the fiscal year progresses, industry analysts will closely watch Switch 2 sales performance and see how it parallels the unprecedented success of its predecessor.
