Circana's September report shows Nintendo Switch 2 unit sales in the United States fell 12 percent year-over-year, a headline figure that initially suggested a slowdown for Nintendo's next-generation hardware.

The data, published in Circana's monthly analysis, arrives as Nintendo markets the Switch 2 alongside special-edition hardware and prepares for major franchise releases.

Circana's industry analyst Mat Piscatella contextualized the number, noting that first-year comparisons for a new console can be unusual.

Piscatella said the Switch 2's sales profile is atypical because the console's early life did not experience the supply constraints that commonly affect high-demand systems in their debut year.

He added that he does not see signs of systemic weakness in the Switch 2's performance and expects demand to ramp up further with upcoming Zelda releases.

On pricing and SKU strategy, Piscatella explained that a price change took effect in September but Nintendo's retail strategy softened the impact.

He noted Nintendo transitioned from a Mario Kart World bundle to a standalone console SKU while maintaining the same shelf price, meaning consumers likely did not perceive a substantial retail price increase.

Piscatella also commented on collector demand for special editions, predicting strong interest in Nintendo's anniversary hardware.

He observed that limited-edition consoles often command significant resale prices on secondary markets, underscoring continued consumer enthusiasm for premium Switch 2 units.

Regional data paint a mixed but resilient picture for Nintendo.

The Game Business reported that UK Switch 2 sales remained strong in September, rising 17 percent year-over-year, with October sales up 2.2 percent.

Those regional gains contrast with the U.S. decline and suggest variable market dynamics across territories.

Nintendo recently shipped a special 40th anniversary Switch 2 console, and the company continues to support the platform through Nintendo Direct promotions and eShop releases.

While Circana's September figures highlight a U.S. slowdown in unit sales, analyst commentary and stronger UK performance indicate the Switch 2 remains commercially significant as Nintendo moves forward with software rollouts and hardware variants.
