Description

Nintendo is experiencing extraordinary demand for its upcoming console, the Nintendo Switch 2, as pre-order applications have far exceeded available supply on the My Nintendo Store.

The successor to the popular Nintendo Switch system, which has become one of the best-selling consoles of all time, is set for release on June 5, 2025.

Anticipation around Nintendo’s next-generation hybrid device has reached new heights, particularly after the company opened a lottery-based pre-order system for Japanese customers. According to an official statement from Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa, more than 2.2 million customers in Japan alone applied for a chance to pre-order the Nintendo Switch 2 via the company’s online store.

Despite proactive efforts to secure components in advance and scale up production, Nintendo was unprepared for such overwhelming demand.

Furukawa explained that the number of orders substantially surpassed the company’s initial expectations, resulting in a situation where many fans will not secure a console in the initial wave of sales from My Nintendo Store. In his detailed message, Furukawa expressed gratitude for the enthusiastic response and confirmed that applicants not selected in the first lottery round will be automatically entered into subsequent waves.

However, he acknowledged that even with additional stock reserved for future lottery sales, Nintendo does not have enough units to meet all the requests currently on file.

"Although we made preparations ahead of time, we are unable to fulfill every customer’s request for the Nintendo Switch 2 immediately, and for this we sincerely apologize," Furukawa stated. Furukawa further reassured the public that Nintendo is actively working to increase its production capacity, aiming to better satisfy the market.

Beginning April 24, physical and online retailers throughout Japan are also set to start their own pre-order and lottery campaigns for the Nintendo Switch 2, expanding opportunities beyond the My Nintendo Store.

The company also plans to continue offering the console through its online platform following launch day, with updates and guidance to be announced later. Globally, the Nintendo Switch 2 launches on June 5, 2025, with a retail price of £395.99 in the United Kingdom, €469.99 across Europe, and $449.99 in the United States.

As the company works closely with distribution partners to address the surge in demand, Nintendo remains committed to making the Switch 2 accessible to as many fans as possible. The unprecedented scale of early interest in the Nintendo Switch 2 underscores the brand’s continued dominance in the gaming hardware market.

Nintendo’s transparent communication and ongoing investment in production signal a strong start for its next-generation hybrid system.
