Description

Nintendo has taken a significant step in the development of its highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2, selecting Samsung Electronics as the manufacturer for its main semiconductor chips.

According to a recent Bloomberg report, this move marks a departure from Nintendo’s previous reliance on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC), the company responsible for the chipsets in the original Nintendo Switch.

The next-generation console’s chipset is being designed by NVIDIA, a long-standing partner in Nintendo’s hardware innovations.

Bloomberg’s sources indicate that this NVIDIA-designed chip has been optimized for Samsung’s advanced manufacturing systems — a primary factor behind the switch to Samsung.

This strategic shift may allow Nintendo to sidestep intense competition for production capacity at TSMC, effectively streamlining the Switch 2’s development and manufacturing timeline. Samsung Electronics’ robust production capabilities are expected to play a pivotal role in Nintendo’s ambitious rollout plans.

The report states that, given Samsung's manufacturing infrastructure, Nintendo could potentially ship more than 20 million Switch 2 units by March 2026.

While Samsung has the technical ability to further increase chip output, Bloomberg notes that the actual number of consoles shipped will ultimately hinge on the output of Nintendo’s assembly partners. In an official statement, Nintendo recently expressed its confidence in meeting consumer demand, projecting sales of 15 million units of the Nintendo Switch 2 within the current fiscal year.

Doug Bowser, President of Nintendo of America, reaffirmed the company’s readiness to ensure adequate supply for the US market. Bloomberg’s investigation also highlighted Samsung’s advocacy for the use of OLED panels in future Switch 2 revisions, aligning with the improvements seen in the current Nintendo Switch OLED Model.

While no official announcements regarding a potential Switch 2 OLED refresh have been made, Samsung’s manufacturing capacity places the company in a strong position to support such hardware enhancements should Nintendo choose to pursue them later in the product’s lifecycle. Nintendo’s partnership with Samsung Electronics for semiconductor manufacturing underscores its commitment to maintaining a consistent global supply of the Nintendo Switch 2—one of the most anticipated gaming consoles in the industry.

As production ramps up and the release draws nearer, all eyes are on how Nintendo’s collaboration with industry giants like Samsung and NVIDIA will shape the next chapter in hybrid gaming.
