Nintendo has unveiled key details regarding the battery charging management for its highly anticipated next-generation console, the Nintendo Switch 2.
The information was disclosed via the official Nintendo Today! smart device app, highlighting changes designed to extend the lifespan of the console's rechargeable battery.
In a move that echoes advanced battery care technology seen in smartphones, Nintendo confirmed that the "Nintendo Switch 2 system halts charging once approximately 90% battery capacity is reached." According to company statements, this feature, referred to as "Stop Charging Around 90%," is intended to significantly reduce battery deterioration over time.
By limiting the charge to near-maximum, users benefit from improved long-term performance, sacrificing just a small percentage of maximum charge in exchange for a healthier battery lifespan.
This approach resembles battery optimization strategies found in devices like Apple's iPhone, where the battery's longevity is closely linked to its chemical age—a function of usage patterns, temperature history, and charging habits.
Nintendo explained that all rechargeable batteries lose their ability to store energy as they age chemically, which inevitably results in reduced runtime and peak device performance.
By enabling the slower, capped charging feature, users can proactively mitigate battery degradation, ensuring consistent gaming experiences for years to come.
Nintendo further clarified that when the "Stop Charging Around 90%" setting is active, the console will not only cap the charge at around 90%, but also decelerate the charging rate as it approaches this threshold.
This measured approach is designed in the best interest of system longevity—a notable advancement for dedicated handheld gaming hardware.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is slated for global release on June 5, 2025.
Pricing is set at £395.99 in the United Kingdom, €469.99 across Europe, and $449.99 in the United States.
The new console aims to build on the immense success of the original Nintendo Switch, which remains one of the best-selling gaming platforms in history due to its unique hybrid design and robust library of exclusive titles.
With the introduction of user-selectable battery care features, Nintendo Switch 2 signals a continued commitment to player experience not only through creative gameplay but also through thoughtful hardware innovation.
Fans and industry analysts alike will be watching closely as this next chapter in Nintendo's storied hardware lineup unfolds.
