Nintendo has officially released its highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 backwards compatibility list, providing a clear overview of which existing Nintendo Switch games will function seamlessly on the new hardware and which may experience issues or incompatibilities.
As the successor to the widely popular Nintendo Switch, the Switch 2 continues Nintendo’s tradition of innovative hardware, but with some new technical constraints affecting select titles.
The new documentation emphasizes Nintendo’s commitment to transparency, specifying the precise games that will not work or will require additional peripherals to play on the Nintendo Switch 2.
The list reflects both the technical advancements of the new console and the unique features of certain legacy games.
The most notable exclusion on the Nintendo Switch 2 compatibility list is the "Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit." Nintendo has confirmed that this title is not currently functional on the Switch 2 platform.
According to the official statement, this is the only game identified so far that is fully incompatible with the new hardware due to its heavy reliance on the first-generation Switch's specific design and accessory integration.
Nintendo further clarified that several games require use of the original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controllers to function properly on the Switch 2.
These titles leverage unique motion control and accessory support that aren’t replicated by default in the new hardware’s controllers.
The list of games needing Joy-Con compatibility includes:
- Ring Fit Adventure
- 1-2 Switch
- Everybody 1-2 Switch
- Game Builder Garage
- Nintendo Switch Sports
- WarioWare: Move It
- Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 01: Variety Kit
- Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 02: Robot Kit
- Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 03: Vehicle Kit
Nintendo has also described further compatibility issues categorized by games that may start up but display technical problems, or that encounter outright startup errors.
The publisher promises to keep players informed as these issues are identified and resolved.
On April 16, Nintendo provided more detail on specific titles.
The company highlighted “Fortnite,” stating that an optimized, native version for Nintendo Switch 2 is in development to take full advantage of the improved hardware.
Additionally, Nintendo addressed feedback regarding "Fitness Boxing." The company announced that known compatibility issues with this game are being actively addressed through forthcoming software updates.
As the Nintendo Switch 2 launch nears, this open communication from Nintendo is essential for both consumers and developers planning their game collections or transition strategies.
Players are urged to check the ongoing compatibility list for the latest updates, ensuring the best gaming experience as they upgrade to the anticipated Switch 2 console.
