Description

Nintendo has officially unveiled a new Nintendo Switch Online Playtest Program, launching later this month, and for the first time, it will be accessible on both the original Nintendo Switch and the recently released Switch 2.

This move underscores Nintendo’s commitment to enhancing user engagement for its subscription-based services while expanding compatibility to its latest console hardware. Announced on Nintendo's official channels, the newest iteration of the Playtest Program follows the company's previous test conducted in October 2024.

Interested users must hold an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership and a valid Nintendo Account to apply.

Nintendo reiterated that this is a test of the same service evaluated in the prior playtest, indicating an ongoing effort to refine its online offerings and infrastructure for both hardware generations. Registrations for the playtest open this week via the official Nintendo website.

According to Nintendo, "applicants will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis," and participants can register either individually or as part of a group.

This broad approach to registration is intended to give as many users as possible the opportunity to experience the exclusive software being tested.

Notably, Nintendo expects to accommodate up to 40,000 participants worldwide, significantly increasing its testing pool compared to previous events. The test is scheduled to run from July 28, 2025, through August 10, 2025.

Eligible regions for participation include the United States, Mexico, Canada, Brazil, Japan, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain.

This wide regional rollout marks Nintendo's growing focus on international feedback for its Switch Online platform, reflecting the company's global user base. For the first time, the exclusive playtest software will be downloadable not only on the standard Nintendo Switch but also on the Switch 2, which launched in June 2025.

This ensures users of the latest hardware can fully participate and contribute to the ongoing development and stability of Nintendo's online services. In a statement adapted from official communications, Nintendo emphasized, "All participants are expected to adhere to the same confidentiality guidelines as previous playtests," referencing last year’s incidents where gameplay leaks surfaced online.

The company reiterated its policy that playtesters must not share gameplay details or footage, reinforcing a secure environment for development feedback. This playtest announcement closely follows Nintendo's earlier reveal of an online demo for 'Drag x Drive,' the upcoming title slated for release next month.

With a robust pipeline of online activities and hardware advancements, Nintendo continues to invest in enhancing the experience for Switch Online subscribers across both existing and next-generation platforms. As registration opens, interested users are encouraged to act quickly due to the popularity and limited availability of playtest slots.
