Nintendo Debunks Super Smash Bros. Movie Rumors After Fox McCloud's Cameo in Super Mario Galaxy Movie

Nintendo Stresses Standalone Approach After Fox McCloud’s Cameo in Super Mario Galaxy Movie

The recent announcement that Fox McCloud, iconic hero of the Star Fox series, would make an appearance in the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy Movie set the Nintendo community abuzz with speculation.

Many fans theorized that this surprise cameo could be the first step toward a long-anticipated Super Smash Bros.

Movie, uniting Nintendo’s expansive universe of characters on the big screen.

However, official statements from Nintendo leadership make it clear: the company is not building a cinematic universe akin to what fans might expect.

In a recent interview with Polygon, Shigeru Miyamoto, the legendary creator behind numerous Nintendo franchises, addressed the rising speculation.

Miyamoto was unequivocal, explaining that he does not anticipate a film where “all the Nintendo characters” join forces.

Rather, he emphasized that the ensemble of Super Mario characters is more than sufficient to drive the movie franchise.

Miyamoto clarified, “We have plenty of Mario characters to create a movie, but we wanted to add a little spice, some secret cameos to surprise the audience.

There will even be a secret character that plays a significant role.”

To illustrate Nintendo’s approach, Miyamoto cited Pikmin, noting the longstanding tradition that Pikmin can appear in any Nintendo property, yet this flexibility does not equate to the assembly of a unified Nintendo movie universe.

Cameos like Fox McCloud are, according to Miyamoto, intended as fun additions rather than signals toward a grand crossover event.

"Unlike something like Super Smash Bros., you won’t see a situation where all Nintendo characters are coming together," he reiterated.

Chris Meledandri, CEO of Illumination—the studio partnering with Nintendo on its animation projects—also weighed in on the rumor mill.

Meledandri noted that the creative process at Illumination is less about building toward overarching franchises and more focused on each film individually.

"Our process is actually different from what you see in other franchises.

We're focused on what would be enjoyable in a given scene.

Sometimes an idea like Pikmin appearing comes up, and after discussion, Miyamoto-san decides whether it fits the Nintendo spirit," Meledandri explained.

This measured, scene-by-scene approach underscores the studios’ preference for crafting experiences tailored to each movie, rather than chasing the interconnectedness of cinematic universes popularized by other studios.

Both Nintendo and Illumination see their crossovers and cameos as ways to delight dedicated fans without promising larger cross-title narratives.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which will be available on the Nintendo Switch and is expected to hit theaters and streaming in the coming seasons, continues Nintendo’s successes in cinema following the box office performance of The Super Mario Bros.

Movie.

As excitement grows over each new adaptation, Nintendo stands firm in its commitment to quality and character-first storytelling rather than pursuing interlinked movie sagas.
