Description

Nintendo has once again found itself in the spotlight as demand for its latest hardware, the Nintendo Switch 2, continues to outpace supply worldwide.

During the company's 85th Annual General Meeting of Shareholders held in June 2024, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa formally addressed growing concerns around ongoing console shortages, offering both an apology and an update regarding the company's response. Reflecting on the console's launch, Furukawa acknowledged, “We anticipated strong interest in the Nintendo Switch 2, but the consumer response has surpassed what we projected.

This surge in demand has unfortunately led to supply constraints, and we recognize that even some of our shareholders have faced difficulty obtaining the system.” Since opening applications for lottery-based console sales via the My Nintendo Store in April 2024, Nintendo received a staggering 2.2 million entries.

Furukawa personally announced these figures on X (formerly Twitter), alongside a statement of regret for not being able to accommodate the unprecedented demand.

He reiterated that, “The volume of applications for Switch 2 allocation far surpassed our expectations, prompting us to schedule additional lottery opportunities.” Following the initial round, Nintendo held four more lottery sales to distribute the Switch 2 to eager consumers.

Despite these ongoing efforts, many fans were not selected, prompting Nintendo to schedule a fifth sales lottery for July 2024.

Furukawa also noted that more general retailers have joined the lottery sales initiative, gradually increasing the number of stores offering in-person purchasing opportunities. “In light of these developments, we are actively enhancing our production systems to maximize output and ensure as many customers as possible can purchase the Switch 2,” Furukawa explained.

He emphasized the company's commitment to addressing the inconvenience caused by the initial surge in demand, and highlighted that production improvements remain a top priority moving forward. In response to questions about the lottery system itself, Furukawa revealed that feedback—both positive and critical—has been instrumental in refining the process.

He stressed that these insights will guide future product launches, ensuring smoother experiences for customers.

Additionally, Furukawa underscored the importance of the Nintendo Account requirement for participating in Switch 2 lotteries, citing its value in strengthening and maintaining long-term relationships with users as the company transitions between hardware generations. As the Nintendo Switch 2 continues to drive significant excitement across global gaming circles, Nintendo’s commitment to expanding supply and enhancing customer engagement stands as a testament to both the console's popularity and the company's responsiveness.

Stakeholders and fans alike can anticipate ongoing updates as Nintendo navigates the challenges brought on by overwhelming demand for its latest hardware platform.
