Description

Nintendo has officially concluded support for Wii U repairs in Japan, signaling the end of an era for the company’s innovative yet short-lived home console.

The announcement follows last year’s notification from Nintendo’s Japanese support service, which outlined plans to discontinue repairs once existing parts had been exhausted.

As of July 3, 2024, Nintendo has confirmed on its website that it has run out of replacement parts, and will therefore no longer accept repair requests for the Wii U system or any related peripherals. A translated statement from Nintendo reiterates the closure: “We have run out of parts necessary for repairs, so as of July 3, 2024, we will no longer be accepting repairs for Wii U consoles and peripherals.” This move also extends to various past-generation products no longer featured in Nintendo’s maintenance program. The Wii U initially launched in 2012 and sought to build on the immense success of the Wii; it introduced the GamePad, a touchscreen controller that offered new opportunities for dual-screen play.

Despite its innovations, the console struggled to maintain commercial momentum amid strong competition and mixed marketing.

According to official Nintendo sales data, the Wii U moved just over 13 million units worldwide—a stark contrast to its predecessor’s 101 million—and boasted over 100 million software sales throughout its lifecycle. Nintendo had already phased out Wii U repair services in North America and other regions in previous years, and this recent announcement solely affects the Japanese market.

The final closure of the hardware support comes shortly after Nintendo discontinued the online servers for both the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS platforms earlier in 2024, ending network functionality and online gameplay for titles on these legacy consoles. While the Wii U’s active life has closed, Nintendo continues to thrive with the Nintendo Switch, which has become a new pillar for the company since its 2017 launch.

The company’s eShop storefront now focuses on Switch releases, and major updates for next-generation hardware are often delivered via Nintendo Direct presentations. From beloved games such as Super Mario 3D World and Splatoon, to the introduction of unique hardware features, the Wii U remains a notable chapter in Nintendo’s storied history.

The end of hardware repairs and online support serves as a natural step in the cycle of console generations.

Fans who still own a functioning Wii U will want to ensure the longevity of their devices, as official support options have now fully concluded.
