Nintendo has officially addressed recent questions about the innovation driving its highly anticipated next-generation console, the Nintendo Switch 2.

In response to concerns from investors that the upcoming system may not clearly mark a generational leap, Nintendo has clarified its focus on enhanced hardware capabilities to empower developers and deliver fresh gameplay experiences.

The discussion took place during Nintendo’s latest financial results briefing, where president Shuntaro Furukawa provided valuable insights into the company’s approach.

Furukawa confirmed that while development on Nintendo Switch 2 began as an official project in 2019, the company’s research and development teams have continuously explored new hardware technologies and technical advancements.

“Our teams are always investigating the latest possibilities in hardware, with comprehensive research forming the foundation for new console development,” Furukawa stated. Furukawa acknowledged the enduring success of the original Nintendo Switch, which remains popular among gamers even in its ninth year since launch.

However, he emphasized that after eight years, increasing the processing power of the platform has become essential.

"Upgrading the hardware’s performance has been key for our developers to realize one of our core principles at Nintendo: delivering innovative and new gameplay experiences," he explained.

As a result, the Switch 2 features significantly enhanced processing capability, enabling software titles such as Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza to explore new interactive possibilities that were previously unattainable on the current system. Addressing the perceived lack of dramatic change in hardware design, Furukawa reassured stakeholders that Switch 2 represents more than an incremental update.

“While on the surface, the differences between Nintendo Switch 2 and its predecessor might seem modest, we have developed entirely new hardware and accessories — filled with our development team’s attention to quality and inventive spirit.

Our characteristic Nintendo innovation is infused throughout,” he affirmed. Looking to the future, Furukawa outlined Nintendo’s commitment to expanding its portfolio of new titles focused on the Switch 2 ecosystem.

"We plan to make Nintendo Switch 2 the new benchmark for our hardware, ensuring it continues to surprise and delight our consumers with exciting innovations," he said. Nintendo Switch 2 will launch across global markets on June 5, 2025, arriving at a recommended retail price of £395.99 in the UK, €469.99 in Europe, and $449.99 in the US.

The console will be available at major retailers and through the Nintendo eShop, with launch titles highlighting the system’s enhanced capabilities.
