Nintendo has confirmed hardware revisions across several Switch family products, led by Nintendo Switch 2, that introduce user-replaceable batteries in response to upcoming European battery regulations.

The company said changes will begin in summer 2026 and will roll through autumn, winter, and into early 2027, with availability varying by market and retailer.

In an official notice, Nintendo explained that the revisions are being made to prepare for new European battery rules that take effect in mid-February 2027.

The company clarified that the only change to affected products is the addition of a user-replaceable battery and that there will be no difference in functionality between existing models and the revised versions.

Key timelines and specification highlights

- Nintendo Switch 2 console: Estimated earliest availability in Nintendo Store in autumn 2026.

Revised console battery capacity is listed as 5172 mAh, about 1% smaller than the current 5220 mAh.

Weight is approximately 411 g, roughly 10 g heavier than the current version.

With Joy-Con 2 controllers attached the total weight is approximately 548 g, around 14 g heavier than the current configuration.

- Joy-Con and Joy-Con 2 controllers: Selected Joy-Con pairs (including Neon Blue and Neon Red) will begin rolling out from summer 2026 in different colours.

Joy-Con 2 pairs are slated for this winter; the revised Joy-Con 2 (L) is about 68 g and Joy-Con 2 (R) about 69 g, each roughly 2 g heavier than prior equivalents.

Battery capacity for these Joy-Con revisions remains unchanged.

- Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller: Expected this winter with a battery capacity of 897 mAh (about 16% smaller than the previous 1070 mAh) and a reported weight of approximately 228 g, about 7 g lighter than the prior version.

- Legacy-style controllers: The Nintendo 64 Controller for Nintendo Switch is scheduled for early 2027 with no battery capacity change.

The GameCube Controller for Nintendo Switch 2 is also estimated for early 2027 with a 525 mAh battery (about 5% larger than the prior 500 mAh) and a weight around 215 g.

Nintendo also confirmed that battery replacement kits for each revised product will be sold through Nintendo Store in Europe, and that availability may vary between countries and retailers.

The company listed specific markets where revised products will be sold, including Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Oman, United Arab Emirates and South Africa, among others.

For retailers and consumers, Nintendo advised checking local Nintendo Store listings and retail partners for exact timing and stock.
