During Nintendo’s shareholder Q&A on June 26, 2026, veteran developer Takashi Tezuka announced he will step down from his role as an Executive Officer effective that date but will remain at the company in a production capacity. Tezuka’s transition marks a notable change for Nintendo’s leadership while keeping one of its most experienced creators involved in product development.
Tezuka is a foundational figure in Nintendo’s history. Over a career spanning 42 years, he worked on seminal titles across Nintendo’s major franchises. His early credits include design work on the original Super Mario Bros. and direction on Super Mario Bros. 3. He also served as director on The Legend of Zelda and Super Mario World and later contributed as a producer on numerous Nintendo projects. More recently, Tezuka has credits on Super Mario Bros. Wonder (2023) for the Nintendo Switch.
At the shareholder meeting, Tezuka reflected on his career and explained his decision in measured terms. Paraphrasing his remarks: with the completion of his term he will step down from his Executive Officer role; looking back on 42 years, he described his career as rewarding and enjoyable, and said he felt fortunate to have helped develop products that bring joy to people around the world. He added that he values Nintendo’s collaborative environment and said he will continue to contribute to the company as a production producer.
Nintendo’s announcement also listed other executive changes tied to the same board adjustments. Takuya Yoshimura, Katsuhiro Umeyama, and Keiko Akashi were also confirmed to be retiring from their roles effective June 26, 2026. Subject to shareholder approval, the company has nominated Yutaka Takenaga, senior director of the Auditing Department, as a director candidate and selected Chika Saka as an Outside Director candidate.
Tezuka’s move preserves institutional knowledge within Nintendo’s development ranks while shifting his formal responsibilities away from executive management. For industry observers and Nintendo fans, his continued participation as a production producer ensures he remains connected to the creative work that defined his career. Nintendo has not indicated any changes to ongoing project credits beyond the announced personnel and board updates.
