Professor Layton and the New World of Steam: Level-5 Details Nintendo's Role in Series Revival

The famed puzzle adventure series, Professor Layton, is set for a much-anticipated return with the upcoming release of 'Professor Layton and the New World of Steam' on Nintendo Switch.

Developed by Level-5, the title marks the first mainline entry in the franchise in nearly a decade, signaling a significant comeback for one of the Nintendo DS’s most beloved exclusives. Originally announced by Level-5 during a recent Nintendo Direct, the new game captures the interest of fans who have long awaited another chapter in the Professor Layton saga.

The previous installment, 'Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy,' launched on Nintendo 3DS in 2013, making the announcement of a new adventure a notable highlight for followers of the series.

Despite experiencing delays in its release schedule, enthusiasm around the project remains high, with Level-5 offering regular updates throughout 2023 and into 2024. Level-5’s CEO, Akihiro Hino, recently shed light on the origins of this new entry during an interview around the Tokyo Game Show.

Hino disclosed that, initially, he was reluctant to revive the Layton series, noting, "There has not been a new title in almost a decade, and we felt the series had concluded quite beautifully." However, Hino revealed that strong encouragement from industry partners drove the decision to develop a new Professor Layton adventure.

"We received a significant push from a major company, which really inspired us to bring the franchise back," he explained.

While Hino did not mention the company by name, he made it clear that Nintendo played a pivotal role, stating, "Certain individuals in the industry, particularly from 'N,' truly wanted to see a new installment." Nintendo, as the overseas publisher for a number of Professor Layton titles, has a longstanding relationship with Level-5.

The Layton series has been a critical and commercial success, with millions of units sold worldwide and consistent praise for its innovative puzzle design and narrative depth.

Nintendo’s continued investment in the franchise underscores its importance as a staple of their handheld and hybrid hardware, spanning from the Nintendo DS to the current Nintendo Switch.
