Nintendo Reports Strong Fiscal Results: Switch 2 Sales Surpass 17 Million Units

Nintendo recently published its financial results for the nine months ended December 31, 2025, offering a detailed look at the company's performance during a critical period that includes the eagerly anticipated launch of the Nintendo Switch 2.

The latest figures highlight significant revenue and profit growth, with robust sales across both hardware and software, reinforced by Nintendo’s proven hit-making strategy and strong software library. According to the report, Nintendo’s net sales soared to 1,905.8 billion yen, marking a dramatic 99.3% increase compared to the previous year.

Operating profit for the period reached 300.3 billion yen (up 21.3%), while ordinary profit climbed to 455.8 billion yen (up 39.4%).

Net profit attributed to Nintendo’s shareholders closed at 358.8 billion yen, reflecting a substantial 51.3% year-over-year rise. The Nintendo Switch 2, which launched globally on June 5, 2025, enjoyed a strong start.

By the end of December, hardware sales reached 17.37 million units.

On the software side, the platform sold an impressive 37.93 million units.

Launch title Mario Kart World drove this momentum, selling 14.03 million units including bundle sales.

Other standout titles included Donkey Kong Bananza, which launched in July and achieved 4.25 million units sold, Kirby Air Riders in November with 1.76 million units, and Pokémon Legends: Z-A – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, released in October with 3.89 million boxed copies sold.

Downloadable versions of Pokémon Legends: Z-A and other Switch 2 Edition titles are included in the overall Nintendo Switch software figures. The enduring success of the original Nintendo Switch hardware persists, evidenced by total sales surpassing 155.37 million units to date, with the software catalog exceeding 1.5 billion units sold globally.

During the reporting period, hardware sales for the original model continued with 3.25 million units—breaking down to 0.98 million for the standard Switch, 1.48 million for Switch OLED, and 0.79 million for Switch Lite.

Software sales for the original Switch reached 108.93 million units in the same period.

Classic franchises further contributed, with Pokémon Legends: Z-A recording 8.41 million total units, and both Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2, released in October, achieving 2.28 million and 2.42 million units sold respectively. Nintendo’s digital sales for its dedicated gaming platforms also saw robust growth, increasing by 14.7% year-on-year to reach 282.0 billion yen, driven mostly by strong sales of downloadable versions of packaged titles.

However, revenue from Nintendo’s intellectual property (IP) business, including mobile and movie-related income, declined by 10.1%, totaling 54.5 billion yen. Overseas markets played a key role in Nintendo’s results, with sales outside Japan totaling 1,470.4 billion yen—about 77.2% of total sales.

The company reported an ordinary profit of 455.8 billion yen, benefiting from 64.8 billion yen in equity-method profits and 47.8 billion yen in foreign exchange gains.

Profit attributable to Nintendo’s owners included a 32.6 billion yen gain from the sale of investment securities as extraordinary income. Looking ahead, Nintendo is set to maintain momentum for the Switch 2 with the upcoming releases of Mario Tennis Fever in February and Pokémon Pokopia in March.

Nintendo also stated: "By continually introducing new titles and sustaining the popularity of recently released games, we aim to further expand the Switch 2's user base." The company confirmed that there will be no changes to its previously announced sales forecasts for both Switch 2 and the original Switch platform.

Nintendo also updated its foreign exchange assumptions for year-end calculations but reaffirmed its consolidated financial forecast for the fiscal year. Nintendo’s 2026 results reinforce its industry leadership, with the successful launch of Nintendo Switch 2 and a strong pipeline signaling confidence in sustained growth for the foreseeable future.
