Description

Nintendo has published its latest financial results for the third quarter of its fiscal year, covering the nine months ending December 31, 2024.

The report offers a comprehensive overview of Nintendo Switch hardware and software sales, digital business performance, and future plans as the platform enters its eighth year.

According to the February 2025 disclosure, Nintendo's operating profit for the period reached 247.5 billion yen, with ordinary profit standing at 327.1 billion yen.

The Nintendo Switch family of consoles achieved lifetime sales of 150.86 million units, cementing its position as one of the best-selling gaming platforms in history.

Cumulative software sales topped 1,359.80 million units.

In the reported nine-month period, overall Switch hardware sales reached 9.54 million units, with the standard model accounting for 2.74 million, the OLED edition 5.07 million, and the Switch Lite 1.73 million units sold. The company adjusted its forecasts for the full fiscal year based on current trends, lowering expected hardware sales from 12.50 million to 11 million units, and software sales from 160 million to 150 million units.

Nintendo also reported income of 49.7 billion yen from its mobile and IP-related business during this period. Nintendo's Switch software lineup continued to perform well.

Key releases included "The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom" (September 2024), which sold 3.91 million units, and "Super Mario Party Jamboree" (October 2024), which reached 6.17 million units sold.

Longtime favorite "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe" added another 5.38 million units to its total, now boasting cumulative sales of 67.35 million units. Nineteen titles, including those from other publishers, crossed the million-seller threshold during this period.

In total, hardware sales saw a year-on-year decrease of 30.6%, while software sales fell by 24.4% to 123.98 million units compared to the previous year.

This decline followed exceptional performance last year, driven by blockbuster launches like "The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom" and "Super Mario Bros.

Wonder." Despite reduced volumes, Nintendo noted that the Nintendo Switch continues to maintain steady demand deep into its lifecycle. On the digital side, sales reached 245.8 billion yen, marking a 29.0% year-on-year drop, largely due to a decrease in sales of downloadable versions of packaged Switch titles.

The mobile and IP-related segment registered sales of 49.7 billion yen, declining by 33.9% after the prior year benefited from exceptional engagement with "The Super Mario Bros.

Movie." Overall, Nintendo's net sales for the period stood at 956.2 billion yen, with overseas revenue representing 76.5% (731.5 billion yen) of the total.

With additional income sources considered, profit attributable to owners of the parent company was reported at 237.1 billion yen. Despite hardware and software sales coming in below earlier forecasts, Nintendo emphasized that the Nintendo Switch remains broadly enjoyed by consumers.

Looking forward, the company reaffirmed its commitment to delivering new titles for the platform.

January saw the launch of "Donkey Kong Country Returns HD," while March is scheduled for "Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition." Additional third-party releases are set to bolster the Nintendo Switch library in the coming months. Nintendo concluded by noting its revised financial forecasts, reflecting sales trends through the first three quarters and updated market expectations.

The company remains dedicated to supporting the Nintendo Switch ecosystem with continuous software releases and platform enhancements.
