Koei Tecmo Initiated Development for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment After Tears of the Kingdom

Koei Tecmo’s surprising approach to Nintendo has resulted in the development of "Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment," turning the usual collaborative process for the Warriors franchise on its head.

Traditionally, Nintendo has reached out to Koei Tecmo to propose crossovers with its iconic properties, but this time, the inspiration came directly from the development and release of "The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom" for the Nintendo Switch. Yosuke Hayashi and Ryota Matsushita, the producers behind previous successful entries in the Warriors franchise, revealed that when "Tears of the Kingdom" launched, they were immediately struck by the depth and narrative potential of the Imprisoning War—an era newly spotlighted in the Zelda universe.

Hayashi recounted his eagerness following the highly anticipated release weekend: "As soon as I played through Tears of the Kingdom, it felt as though the game itself was suggesting we set a Warriors game during the Imprisoning War.

I met with Matsushita to discuss the idea, and together we quickly developed a proposal." Matsushita added that he had already begun formulating his own plans prior to their discussion, stating, "The possibilities for a Warriors title were apparent throughout the game; it seemed like opportunities were scattered everywhere." On the Nintendo side, series producer Eiji Aonuma described a moment of serendipity during "Tears of the Kingdom" development.

Game director Hidemaro Fujibayashi had meticulously established the lore of the Imprisoning War.

According to Aonuma, after completion, Fujibayashi suggested the idea of bringing Koei Tecmo into another Warriors project.

Aonuma, however, decided to let Koei Tecmo take the initiative.

"I said we should wait to hear from Koei Tecmo first," he explained.

Shortly after, Koei Tecmo reached out with their concept, aligning the aspirations of both companies. "Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment" stands as the latest entry in a successful Nintendo Switch series that merges hack-and-slash gameplay with the storytelling and world-building of The Legend of Zelda.

Previous titles, like "Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity," have achieved critical and commercial success, showcasing the demand for collaborative projects between Nintendo and Koei Tecmo. With this new development path, both companies continue to expand the relationship between their storied franchises.

As anticipation rises, fans and industry watchers alike are eager to see how the Nintendo Switch will further embrace the Warriors gameplay formula, integrating inventive narrative elements from Tears of the Kingdom.

The collaboration reinforces Koei Tecmo’s reputation for innovation and Nintendo’s ongoing commitment to reimagining its intellectual properties for both dedicated and new players.
