Nintendo Switch 2 Sales Surpass 10 Million Units: Majority of Players Transition from Original Switch
Nintendo continues to reinforce its dominance in the gaming hardware market with the strong launch of its latest console.
As of September 30, 2025, the Nintendo Switch 2 has officially sold over 10.36 million units globally, according to the company’s most recent financial update.
This achievement comes just months after launch, exceeding initial sales projections and confirming Nintendo’s enduring appeal among gamers.
Released as the successor to the original Nintendo Switch, which launched in 2017, the Switch 2 upholds Nintendo’s tradition of hybrid consoles that bridge home and portable play.
The original Nintendo Switch system has amassed over 154 million units sold, making it one of the best-selling consoles of all time.
However, the robust demand for the Switch 2 has led Nintendo to reduce its sales forecast for the original device, marking a significant generational shift.
During a recent earnings briefing, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa provided insight into the transition between hardware generations.
He noted that a remarkable 84% of Nintendo Switch 2 users were previously owners of the original Switch system.
This figure, based on Nintendo’s internal data, includes not only the earliest supporters of the Switch platform, but also those who adopted the hardware at various points in its lifecycle between 2017 and the Switch 2’s launch.
Furukawa emphasized that the transition to Switch 2 is not limited to early adopters, stating, “Consumers who purchased the Nintendo Switch at different times have consistently moved over to the Nintendo Switch 2.”
A further breakdown of Nintendo’s data reveals that 16% of Switch 2 players are entirely new to the Nintendo Switch ecosystem, underscoring the platform’s ability to attract fresh audiences even as it maintains its established fanbase.
Despite this migration, millions of original Switch users have yet to upgrade, suggesting continued potential for future sales as the Switch 2’s software library expands and more consumers make the switch.
Furukawa highlighted how these migration patterns reflect Nintendo’s commitment to maintaining strong relationships across console generations.
"Existing Switch players are seamlessly moving to Nintendo Switch 2, helping us build lasting connections with our user base," he stated.
Looking forward, Nintendo is poised to continue its tradition of supporting both new adopters and long-time fans.
The successful transition from Nintendo Switch to Switch 2 demonstrates the strength of Nintendo’s brand and its hybrid console strategy, suggesting a promising future for the platform as it enters successive phases of its lifecycle.
