Nightdive Studios Eyes Xbox 360 and PS3 Remasters: Next Steps for Legacy Game Preservation Nightdive Studios has firmly established itself in the video game industry as a leader in remastering beloved classics for modern platforms.

Known for their meticulous work on iconic titles such as DOOM and Quake, the studio is now setting its sights on remastering games from the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 (PS3) era—a significant step forward in game preservation that could have lasting impacts for both players and the broader industry.

These efforts come at a pivotal time, with hardware platforms like Nintendo Switch and the anticipated Switch 2 capable of supporting these technically demanding remasters. In a recent interview with Video Games Chronicle (VGC), Nightdive Studios’ executives Stephen Kick and Larry Kuperman discussed the company’s readiness to take on remasters from the seventh console generation.

While Nightdive has gained a reputation for revitalizing titles from the sixth generation and earlier, moving forward means confronting new hardware challenges.

Kuperman acknowledged the complexity, stating that the unique architecture of the PS3, in particular, would present significant technical hurdles.

“We believe we’re prepared,” Kuperman explained.

"But we have to consider several factors, such as whether a game was exclusive to Xbox 360 or also released on PC.

The availability and quality of source code and assets are important considerations for our preservation efforts.

There are many outstanding titles from this era that shouldn't be forgotten." One frequently requested remaster is Condemned 2: Bloodshot, a title that remains console-bound and has never received a PC version.

Bringing these games to modern platforms not only increases their accessibility but also ensures that their unique contributions to gaming history are not lost to time. Stephen Kick also noted the collaborative approach Nightdive employs when revisiting classic games, referencing the 2008 PS3 title Haze developed by Free Radical.

Despite the game’s commercial and critical shortcomings, Kick suggested that remastering provides a unique opportunity to address past issues.

“Our process often involves consulting with original designers," said Kick.

"We ask them to reflect on what could have been improved and integrate their insights into our remasters, giving these games a chance to fulfill their original promise.” This approach has already proven successful in previous Nightdive projects where dialogue with former developers has resulted in enhanced and more faithful game experiences. The discussion with VGC also touched on the broader challenges of working with PS3 exclusives.

Even Sony struggled with backward compatibility during this console generation, highlighting the uphill battle facing any studio attempting such remasters.

However, Nightdive Studios’ commitment to preservation and technical excellence sets them apart in this complex field. While many of these remastered titles may not run optimally on the original Nintendo Switch hardware due to its limitations, the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 is expected to have the capabilities necessary to handle Xbox 360 and PS3 remasters with greater ease.

As Nightdive Studios moves forward, their dedication to resurrecting classic games remains unwavering, promising fans and preservationists alike a bright future for some of gaming’s most influential titles.
