GoldenEye 007: The Story Behind Nightdive Studios’ Canceled Remaster for Nintendo Switch
In the pantheon of first-person shooters, few titles are as influential or beloved as GoldenEye 007.
Originally developed by Rare and released for the Nintendo 64 in 1997, GoldenEye 007 quickly became a foundational classic for the genre.
In 2023, the impossible finally happened for longtime fans: GoldenEye 007 was re-released on modern platforms, including the Nintendo Switch (through Switch Online) and Xbox One.
This marked the game’s first port since its debut over 25 years ago, not counting previous remakes.
However, some critics and players noted that these new versions failed to capture the original’s excellence, citing technical and presentation issues that left them falling short as definitive experiences.
Rumors and leaked content throughout the years have chronicled the elusive journey of GoldenEye 007 to modern audiences.
The most prominent example before the 2023 announcements was the canceled Xbox 360 remaster, which surfaced online in 2021.
Yet, fewer people know that Nightdive Studios—a developer renowned for its high-quality remasters of classic games—once pitched an official GoldenEye 007 remaster to MGM and Eon Productions, holders of the James Bond license.
Studio head Stephen Kick, in a recent interview with Video Games Chronicle, recounted this chapter, shedding light on why Nightdive’s effort never crossed the finish line.
Kick described the experience as “a real heartbreak,” highlighting that the team had assembled their ideal roster for the project and successfully navigated licensing discussions with MGM and Eon.
“We spent a year getting approvals from the rights holders,” he explained.
"Then, when everything seemed in place, we realized Nintendo’s buy-in was required." According to Kick, Nintendo firmly denied the request with the message: "No third party is ever going to handle Nintendo content."
Nightdive Studios’ CEO Larry Kuperman pointed out the irony of this stance.
"We were actually the first studio to release an N64 game on the Nintendo Switch, with the port of Turok," he said, referencing their successful adaptation of another classic shooter for the platform.
Despite this precedent, Nightdive’s track record was not enough to sway Nintendo’s decision-makers at that time.
Nintendo has since shown more willingness to collaborate, occasionally allowing other studios to work with its intellectual property.
Notably, Brace Yourself Games, an independent developer, co-created Cadence of Hyrule in partnership with Nintendo, resulting in a unique and acclaimed addition to The Legend of Zelda series.
But, for GoldenEye 007, licensing complexities among Nintendo, MGM, Eon, and Rare, combined with the company’s cautious approach to its legacy content, kept the renowned shooter in limbo until its 2023 re-release.
In the end, fans were denied what could have been a definitive GoldenEye 007 remaster by Nightdive Studios.
While the recent Nintendo Switch Online and Xbox One versions bring the classic to new generations, the story behind Nightdive’s aborted project serves as a compelling reminder of the legal, technical, and corporate hurdles that shape the legacy of iconic games.
