Amazon has officially resumed selling Nintendo products in the United States, marking the end of a significant pause in their direct retail relationship.
This change follows months of speculation and reports regarding the absence of official Nintendo offerings on Amazon's U.S.
platform.
Nintendo, a globally recognized leader in gaming hardware and software, had previously maintained a strong distribution presence through Amazon, making the absence deeply felt by U.S.
consumers and enthusiasts.
The dispute, as detailed in a recent Bloomberg report, centered around the issue of third-party sellers on Amazon's marketplace.
These independent vendors were able to offer Nintendo Switch games and hardware at prices considerably lower than the manufacturer's standard.
The reduced pricing was reportedly due to resellers obtaining substantial quantities of Nintendo merchandise from Southeast Asia, which were then imported and sold through Amazon's U.S.
storefront below typical retail rates.
This aggressive undercutting led Nintendo to raise concerns about unfair competition and ultimately resulted in the company pulling its official products from Amazon’s shelves.
As Nintendo products systematically disappeared from Amazon, consumers noted that listings for popular items like the Nintendo Switch console, new releases, and accessories were instead being fulfilled by third-party merchants, not Amazon directly.
This shift applied not only to hardware but also to software and pre-orders for new launches such as the Nintendo Switch 2, which notably was not available on Amazon U.S.
during its recent release.
To address Nintendo's concerns, Amazon attempted to implement authenticity verification measures.
The solution proposed by the e-commerce giant included the adoption of authenticity tags—technology already leveraged for other high-value items on the marketplace to ensure genuine products reach customers.
Despite this effort, Bloomberg reports that Nintendo was not sufficiently reassured, resulting in the company’s decision to continue withholding its products from Amazon U.S.
at that time.
Both companies addressed the controversy through carefully-worded statements.
A Nintendo spokesperson firmly stated, “There is no such fact.
We do not disclose details of negotiations or contracts with retailers,” refraining from confirming or denying any specific claims.
Similarly, Amazon labeled the allegations as “inaccurate” and reiterated the company’s commitment to offering Nintendo products directly to U.S.
customers to ensure a broad and satisfying shopping experience.
While the return of Nintendo products to Amazon marks a significant resolution for U.S.
customers, some challenges persist.
As of this writing, the Nintendo Switch 2 remains unavailable for purchase directly from Amazon’s U.S.
storefront, though it can be found readily on Amazon’s regional sites in Canada and the United Kingdom.
Regardless, this renewed partnership signals an important restoration of a key sales channel for Nintendo fans and continues to impact the broader digital and physical gaming marketplace.
