Publisher Golden Slumbers Ltd. has announced a Kickstarter campaign launching on October 1 for The Rubber-Keyed Wonder, a new book celebrating the Sinclair ZX Spectrum.

The title is a companion piece to the 2024 documentary of the same name produced by Gracious Films and directed by Anthony and Nicola Caulfield.

The project is presented to mark the storied history of Sir Clive Sinclair's affordable home computer, first released on April 23, 1982.

Written by author and gaming historian Kim Justice, who previously authored Arcade Decades - '80s Edition for Numskull Publishing, The Rubber-Keyed Wonder promises more than 200 pages of written and visual history drawn from Spectrum archives.

The book collects commentary and contributions from key figures associated with the platform and traces the machine's impact on home computing and the UK games scene.

According to the Kickstarter page, the book will identify 48 ZX Spectrum games that helped define a generation, presenting each with context and visual material from the era.

The project will be available in multiple formats on launch, including digital, paperback, hardback and a Collector's Edition.

In addition, the publisher is offering a strictly limited run of 480 individually numbered editions.

Those limited editions include an exclusive dust cover, bookmarks and access to a 42-minute documentary produced by Gracious Films that accompanies the book.

The Rubber-Keyed Wonder ties directly to the ZX Spectrum's place in computing history.

The Spectrum line, launched by Sinclair Research in 1982, became one of the UKs most influential home computers and a major platform for British game development throughout the 1980s and beyond.

This book aims to document that legacy for historians, collectors and fans.

Golden Slumbers Ltd. has positioned the October 1 crowdfunding launch to coincide with the Spectrum's 45th anniversary celebrations.

Backers will be able to choose from the various physical and digital tiers when the Kickstarter goes live.

For collectors seeking one of the 480 numbered editions, the publisher notes limited availability and recommends timely backing once the campaign launches.

For industry readers and retro computing enthusiasts, The Rubber-Keyed Wonder offers a focused historical account authored by an established games historian and anchored by the Gracious Films documentary material, providing a consolidated reference on the Sinclair ZX Spectrum's cultural and technical influence.
