Akatori: Contrast Games Reveals New Gameplay Trailer and Features for Nintendo Switch Metroidvania

Contrast Games has officially revealed a brand-new gameplay trailer for Akatori, the highly anticipated Metroidvania and character action-platformer set to launch on Nintendo Switch in Q1 2025.

The developer also shared fresh insights into the game’s features and development process, underscoring its creative ambitions and technical artistry. Akatori’s central gameplay revolves around an innovative combat system, where players can seamlessly switch between staff strikes and powerful fist attacks.

Drawing inspiration from classic Metroidvania design while weaving in action-platforming elements, Akatori invites Nintendo Switch players to explore a sprawling universe crafted with distinct pixel art enhanced by modern 3D models.

With over 10 diverse biomes, each representing various historical eras and unique species, the game promises a rich and varied gameplay experience. Contrast Games’ game director, Serge, described the complexities of blending multiple atmospheres, gameplay mechanics, and dynamic environments: “Bringing such diverse worlds together—each with its own feel and gameplay style—was a major challenge.

Our goal has always been to create an experience where every location feels unique, yet is meaningfully connected.

We hope players will see the results of our efforts.” Echoing these sentiments, art director Stanislav highlighted the dedication behind Akatori’s visual presentation: “Pixel art for a Metroidvania may seem simple, but in reality, combining 2D visuals with advanced 3D elements through modern technology is a complex process.

Despite the challenges, refining our asset creation approach has been both demanding and rewarding.” Among the game’s standout features is the sprawling Kohakujō—an arid wasteland that historically linked the realms of ancient gods.

Players will navigate this dangerous hub that connects all of Akatori’s worlds, encountering environmental hazards that influence both the protagonist’s mind and body.

The game’s narrative follows the journey of young monk Mako and her bird companion as they search for ancient deities and pursue self-discovery, forging friendships and battling formidable adversaries along the way. Akatori is set to challenge players with more than 50 enemy types and over 10 bosses, each offering distinct designs, moves, and mechanics.

Coupled with a dynamic soundtrack that adapts to gameplay events, Akatori aims to provide an immersive sensory experience for seasoned Metroidvania fans on the Nintendo Switch. Akatori will be available globally as a digital release via the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch in Q1 2025.
