Nitrome, the renowned indie developer behind multiple acclaimed titles, is generating excitement with Mouse Work, its upcoming release for Nintendo Switch 2.
First announced during the buzz surrounding the Switch 2’s hardware launch, Mouse Work quickly drew comparisons to fan favorites like Snipperclips due to its playful cooperative mechanics and inventive use of the new console’s mouse mode feature.
Now, the London-based studio is offering another look at the game with a fresh trailer and additional gameplay details that highlight its engaging job-based structure.
The newly released trailer provides an in-depth overview of Mouse Work’s core gameplay loop, spotlighting three distinct job roles—Hairdresser, Archer, and Tour Guide—housed within the game’s Job Centre.
Each role leverages the unique control options provided by Switch 2's mouse mode to craft varied experiences.
In Hairdresser, players must race against the clock to deliver the perfect haircut, using scissors and razors to style customers while incorporating fine-tuned precision with tweezers.
Archer challenges players' reflexes and accuracy as they shoot moving targets, ensuring not to miss any or accidentally strike coworkers.
Meanwhile, Tour Guide revisits mechanics from Nitrome’s classic Hot Air, allowing players to guide tourists through creative obstacle courses while visiting in-game landmarks for bonus rewards.
Notably, Nitrome confirms this mode was programmed by a developer from the original Hot Air series, ensuring authentic homage to their legacy.
In a press statement shared alongside the trailer, Nitrome emphasized their efforts to diversify multiplayer functionality in Mouse Work.
New job types such as Cargo Hauler and IT Support require players to collaborate closely—some crates are too heavy for a single character, and certain in-game popups trap one mouse until another helps out, reinforcing teamwork as a central mechanic.
This evolution expands on the cooperative gameplay that contributed to the early acclaim of Mouse Work after its initial reveal.
While anticipation continues to grow, Nitrome disclosed that Mouse Work’s release date remains unannounced.
The studio clarified that the launch timing depends on when they receive official development kits for Nintendo Switch 2 from Nintendo.
“Mouse Work’s release is contingent upon Nitrome obtaining Switch 2 dev kits.
We’re committed to preparing the game so that once we have the necessary hardware, we can deliver Mouse Work to fans as swiftly as possible,” Nitrome explained in formal communication.
This situation aligns with industry trends, as newly launched consoles often prioritize development hardware allocation to teams with extensive technical needs, causing scheduling challenges for select independent studios.
Mouse Work will launch exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2, with details about its availability on the eShop and enhanced multiplayer features expected as development progresses.
For now, fans can explore the latest trailer and screenshots, offering a vibrant glimpse of the delightful, job-themed chaos awaiting on release.
