Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection, an eagerly anticipated anthology by acclaimed developer Digital Eclipse, is set to bring classic fighting action to the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2.
Highlighting some of the series’ iconic entries, the collection promises an authentic arcade experience for both veteran fans and newcomers.
However, recent developments have tempered excitement for those seeking the physical edition on Nintendo hardware.
In an official statement, Digital Eclipse confirmed that Mortal Kombat 4 will not be included on the physical cartridge for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 versions of Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection.
Instead, players will need to download Mortal Kombat 4 separately via a day-one patch available through the Nintendo eShop.
This contrasts with other platforms, where Mortal Kombat 4 is available directly on the physical disc. Digital Eclipse addressed the situation by explaining, “We were required to submit the Switch build for manufacturing well in advance of the official release, and Mortal Kombat 4 was simply not finalized in time for inclusion.” The studio clarified that all other platforms with a physical release will include the full content roster on disc, but timing constraints specifically affected the Switch and Switch 2 editions due to Nintendo’s production timelines. Following the announcement, some fans voiced frustration, especially after earlier promotional materials suggested complete content parity across all physical releases.
The publisher acknowledged the feedback, citing what it called an “internal miscommunication,” and has since updated all official product listings and communications to accurately reflect the download requirement for Mortal Kombat 4 on Nintendo Switch. On its website, Atari, serving as a distribution partner, now notes: “Nintendo Switch users—To fully enjoy Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection, we encourage you to connect your Switch console to the Nintendo store and download our post-release patches, which add additional content, including Mortal Kombat 4, and enhanced performance improvements.” Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection continues the trend of major retro compilations arriving on modern platforms, reaffirming Digital Eclipse’s reputation for authentic preservation and stellar presentation.
The collection is scheduled for release on June 4, 2024, and will be available both physically and digitally via Nintendo eShop and other major platforms.
Despite the added step for Switch users, the complete Mortal Kombat experience remains just a download away, ensuring fans can revisit legendary battles on Nintendo’s flagship hardware.
