Nintendo Broadens Global Video Content Strategy with Creative Partnerships and New Ventures
Nintendo, a pioneering force in the gaming industry, continues strengthening its footprint in the world of movies and video content.

Movie, produced in collaboration with Illumination, and signals a strategic evolution for Nintendo as an entertainment company.
In a recent investor Q&A, Nintendo’s legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto shed light on the philosophy guiding the company’s foray into the video sector.
Rather than simply seeking growth through increased internal headcount, Nintendo aims to cultivate lasting entertainment experiences as an enduring corporate asset.
Miyamoto clarified that the decision to produce video content marked a significant shift for Nintendo, which had previously focused primarily on interactive forms of entertainment.
Speaking on the company's methodology, Miyamoto noted that, instead of internalizing all aspects of production, Nintendo chose to collaborate with experienced filmmakers and creatives worldwide—an approach that has already borne fruit through projects with Illumination and the upcoming film adaptation of Super Mario Galaxy.

Movie, Nintendo Pictures focuses on both internal film development and experimental projects.
Miyamoto pointed to the recently released Pikmin-themed short film, Close to You, as an example of the innovative content emerging from this division.
According to his remarks, Nintendo Pictures will continue to explore untested formats, even where profitability is uncertain, aiming to generate content assets that spark global conversation and cultural impact.
Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa also addressed the future of films and videos for the company.
He echoed Miyamoto’s sentiment, emphasizing that success in film offers new avenues to propose uniquely “Nintendo-like” entertainment experiences.
Furukawa noted that expanding the company’s reach in the film and video sector provides a highly compatible complement to games, increases fan engagement across generations, and encourages broader support for Nintendo’s products and ecosystem, including platforms like the Nintendo Switch and digital storefronts such as the Nintendo eShop.
