Excitement surrounding Nintendo's latest cinematic endeavor, the Super Mario Galaxy movie, continues to grow as fans anticipate a fresh cast and universe-spanning adventures.
Produced in collaboration with Illumination, the studio behind the wildly successful Super Mario Bros.
Movie, this adaptation marks another significant milestone in Nintendo’s push into multimedia storytelling.
Yet, despite fervent fan requests for a 'Nintendo Cinematic Universe,' industry icon Shigeru Miyamoto is setting expectations straight about the scope of these ambitious crossovers.
During a recent interview with Polygon, Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo's legendary game designer and producer, addressed speculation that the Super Mario Galaxy movie might lead to a larger 'Smash Bros.-style' crossover film.
While the upcoming movie will venture beyond the familiar territories of the Mushroom Kingdom to introduce characters that traditionally exist outside the Mario universe, Miyamoto was clear about the direction of Nintendo's film projects.
“In my view, audiences aren’t likely to see all Nintendo characters joining together in one film,” Miyamoto explained.
He added that Pikmin—the iconic creatures from his beloved franchise—are a special case and that he’s open to including them as cameos in other Nintendo series.
“As you know, one of my rules is that Pikmin can show up in any Nintendo series.”
Miyamoto emphasized that the current focus remains on expanding Mario’s universe organically, rather than orchestrating a grand union of Nintendo franchises.
The strategy is to "spice up" the cinematic experience by integrating subtle cameos that complement Mario's world and align with the Super Mario Galaxy movie’s space adventure theme.
Supporting Miyamoto’s vision, Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri confirmed in the same interview that any crossovers in the film are incidental, not part of a wider cinematic master plan.
"If we agree it’s a fun idea, we then look to Miyamoto-san to make his own judgment on whether it feels appropriate," Meledandri explained, highlighting the thoughtful collaboration between Illumination and Nintendo.
Nintendo has a rich legacy of memorable characters and storytelling, from Pikmin to the expansive Super Smash Bros. universe.
However, Miyamoto’s comments indicate that, for now, the company is prioritizing character-driven stories set within established Nintendo realms.
The playful inclusion of secret cameos will continue to delight fans, but viewers shouldn’t expect a full-scale crossover on par with the Super Smash Bros. series in the immediate future.
As the Super Mario Galaxy movie continues development with its anticipated debut on the horizon, Nintendo and Illumination remain committed to creating engaging, self-contained stories that respect the source material while offering fresh surprises.
Fans can look forward to new adventures and familiar faces—especially those surprise Pikmin appearances—when Mario’s next cinematic journey premieres.
