Nicalis has announced a boxed physical edition of Mewgenics for Nintendo Switch 2, confirming that the retail release will contain the full game on cartridge rather than a download code.

The publisher also reiterated that the digital launch is scheduled to occur one week after the announcement.

No firm street date for the boxed edition has been provided.

Mewgenics is a tactical roguelite developed by Edmund McMillen (The Binding of Isaac, Super Meat Boy) and Tyler Glaiel (Closure, The End Is Nigh).

The project has been positioned by its creators as a blend of breed-and-build progression with turn-based tactical combat, set in the game’s fictional Boon County.

Physical release details

Nicalis clarified that the physical boxed product is a "full, proper physical release," meaning the cartridge will contain the full game and is not a game-key card.

While the publisher has opened pre-orders through select retailers, the company has not yet provided an exact boxed release date for the Nintendo Switch 2 edition.

Gameplay and scope

Developers describe Mewgenics as a legacy-style roguelite that combines squad-based tactics and generational progression.

Players assemble teams from an ever-growing house of cats and equip them with class-specific collars such as Fighter, Tank, and Mage.

Combat is turn-based and emphasizes positioning, combo interactions and environmental effects.

Published feature counts for the game list significant content: a campaign estimated at 200+ hours, more than 10 character classes with up to 75 unique abilities per class, 900+ items, and over 200 enemies and bosses.

The developers also highlight more than 1,000 unique abilities across classes and a variety of environmental interactions that change tactical encounters.

Breeding and progression

A core pillar of Mewgenics is its breeding system.

Cats that survive runs return with scars, experience and inherited mutations; those traits can be passed down to future generations to build increasingly specialized bloodlines.

The developers emphasize emergent choices across runs—deciding whether to keep offspring, trade them with NPCs to upgrade the house, or experiment to discover powerful ability synergies.

What this means for Switch players

The physical cartridge for Nintendo Switch 2 will provide owners a full offline copy of Mewgenics, and the digital launch will occur shortly after the announcement.

The game’s pedigree—McMillen and Glaiel’s prior titles—and the detailed feature list mark Mewgenics as a notable release for fans of tactical roguelites and Nintendo platform holders.
