Mario Tennis Fever Serves Up Exciting New Features on Nintendo Switch 2: Release Date, Characters, and Game Modes Revealed
Nintendo’s iconic Mario Tennis series returns in a major way with the launch of Mario Tennis Fever for Nintendo Switch 2.
Announced officially by Nintendo UK, the latest entry in the long-running franchise will be available exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2 starting February 12th.
This much-anticipated release builds upon the series’ legacy with a wealth of new content, dynamic gameplay mechanics, and accessibility options designed to appeal to both newcomers and series veterans alike. Mario Tennis Fever sets a new standard for character selection, boasting the largest playable roster in the series’ history.
Players can choose from 38 distinctive characters, including newcomers making their Mario Tennis debuts: Goomba, Nabbit, Piranha Plant, Baby Wario, and Baby Waluigi join fan favorites from across the Super Mario universe.
Each character brings their unique flair to the court, allowing players to leverage tried-and-true tennis maneuvers such as Topspin, Slices, and Lobs. One of the game’s standout new features is the introduction of Fever Rackets.
With a collection of 30 unlockable rackets, players can equip characters with specialized gear, each offering distinct abilities.
For example, the Ice Racket can freeze parts of the court, creating slippery surfaces, while the Mini Mushroom Racket has the power to shrink opponents, and the Shadow Racket generates a duplicate character for added unpredictability.
Players can build up their Fever Gauge during matches and unleash a powerful Fever Shot, introducing dramatic twists to the gameplay.
Opponents have the chance to counter these shots in real time, heightening the competitive experience. Mario Tennis Fever introduces a variety of engaging game modes.
The new Trial Towers mode challenges players to climb through a series of uniquely designed levels, while the Mix It Up mode offers creative match rules like the Ring Shot—requiring players to hit balls through rings for points—or the whimsical Forest Court Match, which allows players to feed Piranha Plants to alter the size of the court.
The Wonder Court Match mode draws inspiration from Super Mario Bros.
Wonder, introducing unpredictable Wonder Effects for added excitement.
Returning favorites include the Tournament mode, enhanced with live commentary from the Talking Flower. For those seeking online competition, Mario Tennis Fever provides Online Room for casual, customizable matches, as well as Ranked Matches where players battle for global supremacy.
The Swing Mode takes advantage of the Nintendo Switch 2's Joy-Con 2 controllers, giving players a motion-controlled tennis experience that mimics real swings. Adventure mode offers a single-player campaign in which Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Wario, and Waluigi are transformed into babies by mysterious monsters, forcing them to re-learn their tennis skills and conquer creative challenges as they strive to return to their original forms. Supporting local multiplayer, the GameShare feature enables up to three additional nearby players to join the fun using their own Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch consoles, even if only one person owns Mario Tennis Fever. In celebration of the game’s launch, Nintendo is also introducing new colored Joy-Con 2 controllers in Light Purple and Light Green, available starting February 12th.
Pre-orders for these vibrant accessories and Mario Tennis Fever are now open via the My Nintendo Store. Mario Tennis Fever promises to deliver chaotic tennis fun for all skill levels, solidifying its place as a must-have title for the Nintendo Switch 2 library.
