In a recent Nintendo interview, the company confirmed that Mario Kart World, the eagerly anticipated installment in the long-running kart racing franchise, was originally planned as a Nintendo Switch title—before ambitious visions for the game prompted a shift to the next-generation Nintendo Switch 2.
Developed by Nintendo’s internal team, Mario Kart World began development in 2017.
The title’s evolution and eventual move to Switch 2 offer insight into Nintendo’s development process and the challenges of building a graphically intensive, large-scale racing game for hardware with limited resources.
The development team revealed that early ambitions included doubling the player count from previous Mario Kart installments—moving from the standard 12 racers up to 24.
According to programmer Kenta Sato, accommodating such expansive gameplay features proved challenging due to the original hardware limitations.
Sato explained that various compromises were discussed, such as reducing graphical fidelity, lowering the game’s resolution, and in some cases, dropping the frame rate to 30 FPS.
However, these sacrifices threatened to impact the overall Mario Kart experience and did not align with the team’s vision.
Producer Kosuke Yabuki highlighted the development team’s difficulties in deciding which gameplay or visual elements might need to be cut.
“We continually postponed major decisions on what might have to be sacrificed,” Yabuki stated during the interview.
“Once the decision was made to develop and release Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass, it gave us more time to focus on Mario Kart World.
That’s when the possibility of moving to the Nintendo Switch 2 was raised, which dramatically expanded what we were able to achieve.
It truly felt like a breakthrough for the entire team.”
Yabuki first suggested migrating the game to the Nintendo Switch 2 platform in 2020.
Following this strategic move, Sato described a noticeable uplift in morale and relief among the developers.
He elaborated, “During development for the original Switch, we were constantly concerned about balancing our ambitious design with technical performance.
While the Switch is capable, our plans for Mario Kart World’s vast environments would have resulted in performance issues, such as frame rate drops below 60 FPS.
When the decision was made to transition to Switch 2, it alleviated our concerns.
It gave us the performance headroom to realize all of our ideas without compromise.”
Art director Masaaki Ishikawa echoed these sentiments, noting that the increased power of Nintendo Switch 2 allowed the development team to enhance graphical details and make the game’s world more immersive.
“From the start, our designers wanted to create a much richer visual experience.
With the new hardware, we were finally able to deliver on those aspirations.
For example, our artists could populate the environments with additional trees and scenery, which contribute significantly to making the world feel more natural and alive,” Ishikawa shared.
The decision to move Mario Kart World to Nintendo Switch 2 demonstrates Nintendo’s commitment to delivering high-quality first-party experiences that take full advantage of their latest hardware innovations.
As Mario Kart World continues development, fans can look forward to a racing experience that pushes the boundaries of the beloved franchise, both technically and creatively.
