Nintendo continues to innovate its beloved kart racing franchise with new mechanics that redefine classic gameplay.

In a recent developer interview, the team behind Mario Kart World, available on Nintendo Switch, unveiled two groundbreaking features—Rail Ride and Wall Ride—that promise to elevate the racing experience for long-time fans of the series. Mario Kart World, which launched on the Nintendo Switch, builds on the franchise’s rich legacy of fast-paced multiplayer action.

Over the years, Nintendo has consistently added fresh features and creative tracks, earning the Mario Kart series a global following and impressive sales milestones, with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe alone exceeding 50 million units sold.

Now, the introduction of Rail Ride and Wall Ride signals the next step in gameplay evolution for the franchise. According to the developers, including lead designers Jikumaru and Mr.

Yabuki, Rail Ride allows players to race along suspended rails and power lines, while Wall Ride permits driving up vertical surfaces, such as walls within the tracks.

These mechanics expand the player’s movement options and foster a new level of creativity and skill for mastering tracks.

Jikumaru noted that the team wanted to move beyond the traditional challenge of sharp turns: “When designing courses, we tried adding lots of bends to avoid long straightaways, but too many made navigation more difficult.

Yet, we realized that long stretches of straight road lacked excitement.

This led us to introduce new gameplay mechanics—tricks—that add variety and fun to even the simplest track sections.” The developers drew inspiration from the dynamic world of extreme sports, including skateboarding, BMX, and snowboarding.

Incorporating these elements into Mario Kart World allows players to approach courses with a fresh perspective.

“Tricks like Rail Ride and Wall Ride open up a multitude of driving possibilities,” Jikumaru explained.

He referenced a metaphor from a book about skateboarding: ‘A single piece of wood can create infinite possibilities in a city.’ The Nintendo team aspired to give players that same sense of freedom and innovation.

Yabuki added, “With these tricks, we want racers to think, ‘Can I drive up that wall?’ or ‘Can I ride along that power line?’—empowering them to use their imagination and discover new ways to tackle each track.” With Rail Ride and Wall Ride now part of Mario Kart World, Nintendo elevates the possibilities for creative race strategies and replay value.

Fans can access these new tricks via the game’s diverse lineup of tracks, whether playing solo, online, or in local multiplayer.

The game is available now on the Nintendo Switch through both physical retail and the Nintendo eShop, further solidifying Mario Kart’s reputation as a premier racing title that continues to push the envelope for the genre.
