Mario Kart World is set to debut as an ambitious launch title for the Nintendo Switch 2, marking a significant leap in both gameplay scale and hardware capabilities for Nintendo’s legendary racing franchise.

Developed by Nintendo’s veteran team, Mario Kart World boasts a groundbreaking 24-player open-world experience—a vision that, according to new insights from Nintendo’s official “Ask the Developer” column, has been nearly a decade in the making. Originally, Nintendo began conceptual development on Mario Kart World eight years ago for the original Switch hardware, envisioning the same expansive multiplayer and open-world features that the finalized game boasts.

However, engineering those ambitions onto the Switch 1 presented insurmountable technical challenges.

As world programming director Kenta Sato recounted, the unforgiving hardware limitations of the original Switch meant the team regularly had to consider what features—notably, high visual quality and stable performance—might have to be sacrificed.

Sato explained that options such as reducing graphics quality, lowering the display resolution, or capping the framerate at 30 frames per second were all seriously considered due to performance constraints. Producer Kosuke Yabuki offered further context on these development hurdles, explaining that the team continued to push forward while making tough decisions about which features could be kept or deferred.

The team’s decision to launch the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass, initially announced in February 2022 and completed in late 2023, provided crucial development breathing room.

This allowed the developers to refine Mario Kart World without compromising the series’ trademark quality. The turning point for the project came in 2020.

By then, Nintendo had a working understanding of the forthcoming Switch 2’s upgraded specifications.

Transitioning Mario Kart World to the new hardware opened the door to delivering their full creative vision.

Sato reflected that attempting to realize the game’s vast and densely populated open world on Switch 1 would have resulted in unacceptable framerate drops and a compromised experience.

With the hardware leap offered by Switch 2, these obstacles were effectively removed.

Sato admitted that the switch to the newer system was a tremendous relief for the team, who could now focus on optimizing the gameplay and visuals without worrying about fundamental performance compromises. Producer Yabuki echoed this sentiment, describing the moment as a long-awaited breakthrough for the project.

The Nintendo Switch 1 was never envisioned as a powerhouse, and pushing its limits for a title as large-scale as Mario Kart World would have been unrealistic.

With the power of Switch 2, however, Nintendo is ready to deliver what could be the series’ most expansive and technically impressive release to date. Mario Kart World’s journey underlines Nintendo’s commitment to innovation and quality, as well as its willingness to delay projects to ensure they meet high standards.

As a flagship title for the Switch 2, Mario Kart World aims to redefine expectations for multiplayer racing on Nintendo platforms.
