Nintendo has published its first in-depth developer interview for Mario Kart World, unveiling new insights into the highly anticipated racing title and revealing key decisions that shaped its development.
Mario Kart World marks the next evolution in the iconic franchise, expanding on the principles and successes established by Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for the Nintendo Switch.
Prototyping work for Mario Kart World began in March 2017, just ahead of the launch of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
By the end of that year, development had officially commenced for the Nintendo Switch platform.
However, as the game's scale grew—including ambitious plans like doubling the player count from 12 to 24 to bring Nintendo’s vast new courses to life—the development team faced significant technical and creative challenges.
In a recent interview, producer Kosuke Yabuki recounted, “While developing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, we were already exploring directions for the next game.
We perfected the classic formula of racing on individual tracks, and with Mario Kart World, the idea was to offer players a larger, interconnected world to race through.
We started by establishing a new style of world map to support this vision.”
Art director Daiki Ishikawa highlighted the creative opportunities and challenges of increasing the player count: “Initially, having 12 racers seemed plenty, but on expansive tracks, it created a sparse, almost empty atmosphere.
Expanding to 24 players added vibrancy and more player interactions, though it also meant a significant increase in development workload.”
Technical director Masato Sato detailed the tough compromises the team faced working with the Nintendo Switch’s hardware limitations.
"We were constantly weighing visual enhancements against potential sacrifices, like reducing resolution or frame rate," he explained.
The team was hesitant to compromise on quality, leading to difficult discussions about how best to deliver their creative vision.
The turning point came in 2020, when discussion began about transitioning Mario Kart World development to the next-generation Nintendo Switch 2.
According to Yabuki, this shift "opened up a world of new possibilities," as the new platform’s capabilities would allow the team to expand gameplay without making sacrifices in graphics, performance, or multiplayer experiences.
Around this time, the decision was also made to release the Booster Course Pass for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, providing fans with new content and buying the development team more time to realize their ambitious vision for Mario Kart World.
Sato confirmed, “The move to Switch 2 was first proposed around 2020, once we had a clearer sense of the hardware’s projected capabilities.
Actual development units arrived later, so we continued design work based on anticipated specs until then.”
This developer interview offers fans a transparent and detailed look at the creative process behind one of Nintendo’s marquee franchises.
It also underscores Nintendo’s commitment to innovation and quality in its flagship titles, even if it means lengthier development cycles or a platform leap.
As anticipation builds for both Mario Kart World and the Nintendo Switch 2, this inside look affirms that Nintendo remains dedicated to delivering groundbreaking, player-focused experiences.
