Description

Idea Factory has officially released Mado Monogatari: Fia and the Wondrous Academy for Nintendo Switch in English, marking the first time Western players can experience this celebrated dungeon-crawling RPG outside of Japan.

The launch coincides with the debut of a brand new trailer, highlighting the game’s dynamic features and rich storytelling heritage. First introduced in the late 1980s, Mado Monogatari began as a series of first-person dungeon-crawler RPGs developed by Compile for the MSX and PC-98 platforms.

Over the decades, the franchise has stood out with its engaging dungeon adventures and memorable characters.

Importantly, Mado Monogatari also serves as the origin for the beloved Puyo Puyo puzzle series, linking it to one of Japan’s most enduring gaming legacies. The story of Fia and the Wondrous Academy centers on Fia, an aspiring mage who overcomes a challenging journey from her hometown to enroll at the Ancient Magic Academy—a historic institution renowned for producing legendary mages.

As Fia strives to become a Great Mage, players will join her through rigorous schoolwork, difficult professors, and mysterious events, forming bonds with classmates and unraveling magical secrets within the academy’s walls. The game invites players to engage in randomly generated dungeon exploration, combining real-time elements with turn-based battles.

As Fia battles magical creatures, including classic adversaries such as Puyo and Skeleton T, she levels up by mastering Magic Artes and collecting Elemental Orbs.

Inventory and stat management are crucial as each floor promises new challenges and treasures.

Players can track Fia’s progress using the Grimoire system, unlocking abilities and upgrading her magical arsenal through accumulated Learning Points. At the academy, Fia can take breaks from her adventures to participate in various side activities: browsing the Bulletin Board for mini-games, building friendships with classmates, growing ingredients, and cooking curry to gain dungeon boosts.

Adding further depth, the item synthesis system in the Storage Room encourages players to combine materials found in dungeons to create powerful equipment—essential for progressing through increasingly complex challenges. A representative from Idea Factory shared in the game’s launch trailer that the company is excited to introduce this beloved RPG series to a wider audience, emphasizing that both physical and digital editions are now available for Nintendo Switch owners via the eShop and retail partners. The English release of Mado Monogatari: Fia and the Wondrous Academy not only celebrates the enduring legacy of Compile’s original design but broadens the reach of one of Japan’s most influential RPG franchises.

As players dive into the mysteries of the Ancient Magic Academy, they are invited to discover why Mado Monogatari continues to captivate fans decades after its debut.
