Description

Taito, the renowned Japanese game developer responsible for the iconic Space Invaders franchise, has expressed ongoing interest in reviving Space Invaders Get Even for modern platforms, particularly the Nintendo Switch.

Originally launched as a WiiWare exclusive back in 2008, Space Invaders Get Even offered fans a fresh perspective by letting players control the alien invaders, tasked with wreaking havoc upon human cities from their UFO.

The game received positive feedback for its innovative gameplay, earning 8 out of 10 stars in initial reviews and ranking as one of the more memorable and inventive Space Invaders spinoffs. Unfortunately, due to the closure of the Wii Shop Channel, Space Invaders Get Even has become inaccessible to new players, a situation emblematic of many digital-only titles now lost to time.

As a result, fans have long requested a re-release, ideally on a contemporary system like the Nintendo Switch or the Nintendo eShop. In a recent interview with Wccftech discussing Space Invaders Forever, Taito’s game director, Yuichi Toyama, addressed questions about a possible return for Space Invaders Get Even.

Toyama explained, "Space Invaders Get Even was designed around the unique capabilities of the Wii Remote, and while we'd certainly like to bring it to a new audience if demand is sufficient, adapting the controls for a modern platform remains the central challenge.

We are exploring solutions, including the potential use of the Nintendo Switch's touch screen to recreate the original experience." Toyama further elaborated on the importance of maintaining the game's core feel, acknowledging that the Nintendo Switch’s Joy-Con functionality could provide a comparable alternative to the Wii Remote, referencing titles like Super Mario Galaxy on Super Mario 3D All-Stars as successful examples of control adaptation.

While no official projects are currently in development, Taito is monitoring fan interest and technical feasibility for a possible re-release. Additionally, Toyama mentioned an intriguing concept for a large-scale version of Get Even, envisioning a multiplayer scenario where dozens of players could cooperate as invaders.

However, he clarified that this remains a speculative idea, with no active plans for production. Space Invaders Get Even's absence highlights the wider industry challenge of digital-only games becoming inaccessible due to platform closures.

As Taito explores innovative ways to renew its legacy on modern hardware, fans and preservationists alike hope that lost classics like Get Even will once again find a place on systems such as the Nintendo Switch.

For now, Taito encourages anyone interested in seeing the return of Space Invaders Get Even to make their voices heard, as community demand could shape the future availability of this unique entry in the Space Invaders series.
