Toys“R”Us Live-Action Movie Announced by Story Kitchen and Toys“R”Us Studios
Toys“R”Us, once the defining toy store of the ‘80s and ‘90s, is poised for a comeback—this time on the silver screen.
Generations of children remember strolling its aisles, marveling at action figures, dreaming of dollhouses, or pining after a brand-new Super Nintendo.
Although the iconic retailer closed its doors a few years ago, its legacy remains strong in popular memory.
Now, in celebration of that enduring cultural presence, Story Kitchen—renowned for their adaptations of video game stories—has teamed up with Toys“R”Us Studios to develop a new live-action film that honors the spirit of what many consider “one of the most magical places on Earth.”
Announced in Variety on June 6, 2024, Story Kitchen's co-founders Dmitri M.
Johnson and Mike Goldberg emphasized the emotional and cultural impact of Toys“R”Us.
Recounting their own experiences growing up, they stated that Toys“R”Us remains a touchstone for countless people: "The influence that Toys“R”Us has had on generations is undeniable.
As children of the 1980s who grew up visiting those stores, we’re proud to create a film that embodies the adventure, imagination, and nostalgia symbolized by Toys“R”Us."
Kim Miller Olko, president of Toys“R”Us Studios, also commented on the project’s significance: "This inaugural film for Toys“R”Us Studios is a tremendous opportunity to translate our brand’s magic to the big screen.
The story aims to evoke the boundless wonder and playful excitement that are intrinsic to Toys“R”Us.
Our goal is to tap into the joy and fantasy that have drawn families to our stores across generations."
According to industry sources, the live-action film is described as a blend of adventure and fantasy with comparisons to beloved classics like "Night at the Museum" and "Back to the Future." The producers are aspiring to capture the imaginative energy found in films such as "Barbie" and "Jumanji," where toys and characters come vividly to life, inspiring viewers’ sense of wonder rather than focusing strictly on the retail business story.
While the production is still in its early stages and has not yet attached cast or a director, development is expected to accelerate in the coming months.
This collaboration between Toys“R”Us Studios and Story Kitchen aims to rekindle the memories of millions who once called themselves “Toys“R”Us Kids,” ensuring the toy store’s iconic imagery and legacy continue to enchant new audiences through film.
