LittleBigPlanet 3 servers offline indefinitely on PS4: Sony confirms UGC access limited

Sony has confirmed that LittleBigPlanet 3 servers for PlayStation 4 will remain offline indefinitely, cutting community access to shared creations for the 2014 platformer.

The company said ongoing technical issues forced the PS4 servers to be taken offline temporarily in January 2024 and that the decision has now been made to keep those services offline without a set restoration date.

LittleBigPlanet 3 launched in 2014 and was developed by Sumo Digital with assistance from series creator Media Molecule.

The title has long relied on user-generated content (UGC) and a robust in-game creation and sharing ecosystem, especially on PlayStation platforms.

In its April 2024 announcement, Sony explained that the consequence of the server outage is a loss of online features for LittleBigPlanet 3 on PS4.

The company stated that all online services for the game, including access to other players’ creations, are no longer available.

Sony also clarified that any user-generated content saved locally on a player’s PS4 will remain accessible, and that new creations can be played on the console where they are made but cannot be uploaded or shared with the broader community.

Offline features such as the single-player campaign will continue to function.

What this means for players: community levels, modes and other content that require server connections are inaccessible on PS4 while locally stored creations and offline gameplay remain intact.

The announcement did not provide a timeline for restoring online services.

LittleBigPlanet 3’s development credits and its reliance on shared creations make this a significant change for long-term fans and creators.

Sumo Digital and Media Molecule are the recognized developers behind the 2014 release; Sony is the platform holder managing the PlayStation 4 servers referenced in the statement.

The decision to keep LittleBigPlanet 3 servers offline indefinitely underscores the fragility of cloud-dependent features for legacy titles.

For now, players can continue to enjoy offline campaign content and any UGC preserved locally on their PS4 consoles, but broader access to the game’s community creations has been cut off.

This update follows the initial server outage in January 2024 and was confirmed in an official Sony statement in April 2024.

For players seeking alternatives, checking local backups of UGC and preserving creations on individual PS4 systems is the only guaranteed way to retain access to community-made levels and assets.
