Description

Playtonic, the well-known independent studio behind the Yooka-Laylee series, is the latest developer to face workforce reductions amid widespread industry layoffs.

Founded in 2014 by former Rare developers, Playtonic originally made waves with its debut title Yooka-Laylee, a spiritual successor to the beloved Banjo-Kazooie franchise.

The studio later expanded its portfolio, both as a developer and a publisher under the Playtonic Friends label, supporting a range of acclaimed indie releases such as Victory Heat Rally and Lil Gator Game, many of which found audiences on the Nintendo Switch and other platforms. Despite solid critical reception and respectable sales figures for several of its titles, Playtonic has now undergone staff cuts, according to multiple former staff members who shared their news on LinkedIn.

The affected departments include VFX, art, and production, although the company has not disclosed the exact number of layoffs.

A review of the affected roles suggests that the impact is being felt across several core teams.

This news aligns with ongoing turbulence in the broader video game industry, where many studios—large and small—have faced financial pressures leading to reductions in workforce. Playtonic’s history began with a promise to revive the spirit of classic 3D platformers, with Yooka-Laylee arriving in 2017 to strong anticipation from nostalgic gamers.

The subsequent release, Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, shifted toward a 2D platforming style and further showcased the studio’s versatility.

However, the mainline series has remained dormant in recent years.

The announcement of Yooka-Replaylee, a full remake of the original game set for a 2025 launch, has renewed interest in the studio’s work, particularly among the Nintendo Switch community, where family-friendly platformers remain in high demand. In addition to developing its own IP, Playtonic has dedicated significant efforts to game publishing through Playtonic Friends.

The label aimed to champion unique indie voices across multiple platforms, including the Nintendo eShop, yet some of these published titles have not achieved the commercial performance necessary to sustain ongoing growth.

Industry sources indicate that these sales challenges have contributed to the decision to reduce staff. A representative statement circulating from staff involved in the layoffs described the situation as unfortunate given the passion and critical praise the team’s projects have received.

They expressed appreciation for their time at the studio and remained optimistic about future opportunities in game development. While Playtonic’s immediate roadmap beyond Yooka-Replaylee remains uncertain, the developer’s impact on the platforming genre and indie publishing scene is well-recognized.

The studio has yet to issue a formal statement regarding the layoffs, but the gaming community will be watching closely as 2025 approaches and anticipation builds for the next chapter of Yooka-Laylee on Nintendo Switch and beyond.

Readers can expect updates as official information emerges.
