Description

Nintendo has officially unveiled a highly anticipated addition to its next-generation lineup: Borderlands 4, the latest entry in Gearbox Software’s celebrated looter-shooter franchise, is coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 in 2025.

This announcement was highlighted in Nintendo's recent Creator’s Voice video, featuring CEO and founder of Gearbox Software Randy Pitchford alongside chief creative officer Randy Varnell, who discussed the many facets of bringing their acclaimed series to Nintendo’s forthcoming hardware. Set on the perilous planet of Kairos, Borderlands 4 invites players to step into the boots of four all-new Vault Hunters.

These protagonists are driven by the pursuit of glory and riches, but are quickly swept into a desperate struggle against the iron-fisted rule of the Timekeeper, a tyrant who maintains strict order through widespread oppression.

When a world-shattering event disrupts the Timekeeper's regime, chaos reigns across Kairos, igniting a fierce resistance and setting the stage for the frenetic, mayhem-filled gameplay the Borderlands franchise is known for. In a statement released by Gearbox, Randy Pitchford emphasized the studio’s commitment to delivering the full Borderlands 4 experience to Nintendo Switch 2 players: "Our aim is to ensure that players on Nintendo's next-gen platform can enjoy the same expansive, action-packed journey as those on any other console." Co-creator Randy Varnell echoed these sentiments, adding that Switch 2 players will have "access to every mode, co-op functionality, and the signature vault-hunting excitement the series is loved for." Players can look forward to traversing a sprawling world teeming with hostile bandits, lethal robots, and monstrous wildlife.

The game promises a wealth of weaponry and gear, empowering users to tailor their playstyle using devastating Action Skills unique to each Vault Hunter.

Whether embarking on solo adventures or linking up in cooperative play with up to three others, fans can expect dynamic open-world combat, intensive boss encounters, diverse loot drops, and a vibrant roster of fresh and returning characters. Borderlands 4 will be available both physically at retail locations and digitally via the Nintendo eShop when it launches on Nintendo Switch 2 worldwide in 2025.

This marks the franchise's debut on Nintendo’s next-generation platform, further cementing the Borderlands series as a mainstay in contemporary gaming. With this major reveal, Gearbox Software continues its legacy of genre-defining innovation while Nintendo Switch 2 strengthens its standing as a premier home for blockbuster releases.

Stay tuned for future updates on Borderlands 4 as its release date approaches and more details emerge through official Nintendo Direct presentations and Gearbox Software communications.
