Larian Studios, the acclaimed developer renowned for the Divinity RPG series, has reiterated its commitment to original artistry and storytelling in its next major release.
Following recent debates in the gaming industry regarding the use of generative AI, CEO Swen Vincke clarified the studio’s stance during a Reddit AMA held earlier today.
The announcement follows comments made by Vincke after The Game Awards last month, in which he suggested that Larian was exploring generative AI for planning stages within its development process.
That statement led to widespread speculation and concern among fans and industry peers, prompting further clarification from the studio. Addressing the topic directly in the AMA, Vincke began, “To avoid any misunderstanding, there will not be any generative AI art in the new Divinity game.
Discussions about using AI tools in the concept phase caused confusion, but we want to make it clear: none of our concept art will be generated with AI tools.
This decision eliminates any questions regarding the authenticity or origin of our artwork.” While Vincke acknowledged the studio’s ongoing interest in emerging technologies, he emphasized that creativity and iteration remain human-driven core values.
He explained, “We are always seeking ways to refine our ideas more quickly, and generative AI can potentially accelerate that process across different departments.
Our hope is that these tools can help us focus development efforts, minimize waste, and deliver even higher-quality games.
However, we are firmly committed to ensuring that any AI-driven content used in our games originates from data we own and control.” Adam Smith, writing director at Larian Studios, also contributed to the discussion by assuring fans that all creative writing in the upcoming Divinity title will be human-crafted.
“While a small team experimented with AI text generation tools for research, the output did not meet our standards.
These tools are not, and will not be, used for dialogue, journal entries, or any narrative content in Divinity,” Smith stated. This approach places Larian Studios in line with other major developers, such as Nintendo, which recently confirmed that no AI-generated artwork was used in Mario Kart World’s development.
As the debate regarding AI’s role in game creation continues, Larian’s commitment to transparency and artistic integrity resonates strongly with its player base and colleagues alike. The new Divinity game, with full details still under wraps, is expected to maintain the standards that have established the series as a benchmark for quality RPG experiences on platforms such as the Nintendo Switch and PC.
Fans can look forward to more updates as development progresses, confident that the creative vision guiding the project remains authentically human.
