Koei Tecmo Discusses Potential Remake of First Fatal Frame Game on Nintendo Switch

Koei Tecmo, a leading Japanese game developer known for revitalizing classic franchises, is having an ongoing dialogue about the future of its renowned horror series, Fatal Frame.

With the popularity of remakes and remasters on platforms like the Nintendo Switch, fans have been eagerly asking for a modern version of the original title, Fatal Frame.

In a recent interview with Japanese gaming outlet 4Gamer, series director Makoto Shibata offered insight into the company’s current stance on remaking the first entry in the series. Originally released in 2001 for PlayStation 2 and Xbox, Fatal Frame (known as Project Zero in Europe) quickly became a cult favorite for its innovative gameplay, where players use a camera to capture spirits.

The unique mechanic set it apart from other survival horror franchises, leading to multiple sequels and adaptations across platforms, including the Nintendo Switch via the enhanced Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water and the upcoming remake of Fatal Frame: Crimson Butterfly. When questioned about the likelihood of a Fatal Frame remake, Shibata acknowledged that both fans and staff at Koei Tecmo have voiced strong support for revisiting the series’ beginnings.

He explained, “We have received requests and discussed it within the company.

The concept of photographing spirits was well received at the time because it was so novel, but as we continued the series, new features were introduced.” Shibata noted that the scope of the original game is more limited compared to later entries, with fewer areas and characters.

Additionally, he remarked that the game’s narrative is relatively short, which presents unique challenges when updating it for modern audiences.

"Given its brief story, we felt that a remake of Crimson Butterfly, with its longer storyline and richer content, was a priority over the first game." Addressing the potential for a future remake, Shibata emphasized that while the limitations are significant, the possibility is not off the table.

“There is still a chance for a remake of the first Fatal Frame,” he shared.

"However, we would need to significantly expand the content to create a truly new experience." Koei Tecmo’s focus on delivering quality remakes—such as the critically acclaimed Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water release for the Nintendo Switch eShop—demonstrates their commitment to preserving the series’ legacy on current hardware.

As the reception to Fatal Frame: Crimson Butterfly’s remake will shape future projects, dedicated fans and Switch owners may yet see the unforgettable terror of the original Fatal Frame brought to life once again.
