Nintendo has officially unveiled Kirby Air Riders for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, offering fans a comprehensive look at new features, enhanced modes, and expanded gameplay during the latest Kirby Air Riders Direct presentation.
Helmed by renowned game director Masahiro Sakurai, this highly anticipated title revives the thrilling action of its GameCube predecessor, Kirby Air Ride, bringing a fresh experience to both seasoned players and newcomers when it launches November 20.
Building upon the legacy of Kirby Air Ride, first released in 2003, Kirby Air Riders takes the beloved racing formula and elevates it with a diverse roster of rider characters, new Air Ride machines, and additional special moves.
This ambitious project is a collaborative effort between Sora Ltd.
and Bandai Namco Studios.
Players can now choose from a range of characters, including Kirby, Meta Knight, King Dedede, Bandana Waddle Dee, and even classic Kirby adversaries like Cappy and Chef Kawasaki.
Each rider possesses unique stats such as weight, durability, and special moves, which significantly influence performance.
During the presentation, Masahiro Sakurai provided a detailed breakdown of gameplay mechanics.
Air Ride machines—known simply as "machines"—automatically propel players forward, with directional control handled by tilting the stick left or right.
The B Button initiates a Boost Charge, enabling both braking and the potential for powerful speed bursts out of corners through drift maneuvers.
The Y Button serves as the "Special" command, activating character-specific abilities that can turn the tide in a race.
Notably, Kirby himself sports four unique special moves, one for each of his playable colors.
Players can further combine these moves with attack techniques like Quick Spin to maximize their on-track advantage.
Adding a strategic layer, the selection process allows players to pick a course before choosing their rider and machine.
The roster is balanced to offer new approaches for every race.
Machines themselves also vary in capability—certain models provide better durability or can glide longer distances, adapting to varied environments and playstyles.
A returning feature is the ability to inhale enemies and copy their abilities, which temporarily grants riders new ways to attack or accelerate during competition.
A major highlight is the return and expansion of City Trial mode.
Relocated to a vast floating island named Skyah, this gameplay mode tasks players with upgrading their machines by collecting power-ups, attacking rivals, and navigating randomized in-game events for five minutes before moving on to a high-stakes Stadium round.
In this second phase, competitors tackle stadium challenges selected based on the power-ups and machines acquired, further deepening the strategic depth.
Multiplayer options include local wireless for up to eight players and online play supporting up to sixteen racers, with integrated GameChat video and voice connectivity enhancing the social experience.
In addition, Air Ride mode encourages up to six riders to contest for first place with unique mechanics that reward aggressive play through speed-enhancing star collection.
There’s also a Lessons mode designed to train newcomers and veterans alike in both basic and advanced gameplay techniques.
Complementing the gameplay rollout, Nintendo Switch Online subscribers will receive seven tracks from the Kirby Air Riders soundtrack—including the English-language main theme—through the Nintendo Music app on release day.
Fans eager for hands-on access can look forward to the debut demo at PAX West 2025 (August 29–September 1) at Nintendo’s booth, available with a Warp Pipe Pass reservation starting August 21 on a first-come, first-served basis.
Kirby Air Riders is poised to capture hearts anew with its deep customization, frantic action, and robust multiplayer offerings.
